Mozilla abandons plan for ads on Firefox's new-tab page

Mozilla has scrapped a plan to put ads on the windows that show when Firefox users launch a new browser tab.

Mozilla announced the Firefox new-tab page advertisements idea in February but on Friday night announced an end to the "experiment."
"A lot of our community found the language hard to decipher, and worried that we were going to turn Firefox into a mess of logos sold to the highest bidder; without user control, without user benefit," said Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's vice president of Firefox, in a blog post. "That's not going to happen. That's not who we are at Mozilla."

Should not have been in consideration in the first place.

    Hi there.

I'm sure it will re-appear in a different form in a different guise. These days everything is always about "Monetisation" of your product -- however unlike mobile phones there's a lot more scope for "subliminal" (barely noticed) ways of pushing products. The screen real estate is much larger. On mobiles the ads usually appear at the very bottom of the screen and are IMO largely totally ignored. Any app that uses larger areas of the screen on a mobile are almost immediately uninstalled - so I often wonder how effective this type of advertising really is -- but I suppose if only 0.005% even bother to look and .0001% buy anything the advertisers probably think it's worthwhile due to the sheer number of mobile phones in use.

The fact the experiment was EVEN considered in the first place shows that this type of philosophy has now buried itself in the corporate psyche - and it's bound to re-emerge in some other guise later.

    Cheers

Note: This story originally reported that Mozilla is dropping its plan for sponsored content altogether. That's not the case. The headline and the story have been corrected to clarify.

Mozilla is updating a plan to put ads on the windows that show when Firefox users launch a new browser tab, reassuring users that they won't lose control or be overwhelmed with ads.

    Hi there

+1 for Konqueror -- No way will this stuff happen on THAT browser. It's my regular browser now -- I only use others if I have to have DRM / Silverlite content (Netflix / SKY GO for example).

    Cheers
