    Alternative:
set 'about:blank' as your home page, (helps FF load a lot faster)
    and/or
put 'about:blank' on the bookmark toolbar then wheel click it for a new blank tab.

You can hide the content but I don't think it stops the 'bloat' from loading in the background!

Its actually worst then first announced. They will track you and offer adds for what they think you want.(hand picked partners)

"A lot of our community found the language hard to decipher, and worried that we were going to turn Firefox into a mess of logos sold to the highest bidder; without user control, without user benefit," said Johnathan Nightingale, Mozilla's vice president of Firefox, in a blog post. "That's not going to happen. That's not who we are at Mozilla."

But the new-tab page still could carry sponsored content from "hand-picked partners," and Mozilla plans to experiment with that in the future.

I have been using Ghostly for years but the fact that Mozilla says that Privacy is their top issue and then turn around and pull a Google. I say F*** Google and F*** Mozilla.

I don't know if Firefox 29.0.1 is caching usage content but FF 'Nightly' does!
However, I tweaked 'about:config' a little which may help:
