Start Menu will reportedly return to Windows 8.1 this fall

At BUILD 2014, Microsoft surprised many by showing off a Start menu that will be making its way back into Windows. After Windows 8 debuted without the iconic feature, there was a great deal of negative feedback, and along with numerous other contentious issues surrounding the OS, it eventually lead to the departure of Steven Sinofsky.

But with Windows 8.1 and its first major update, Microsoft has been slowly re-introducing classic features and has made a commitment to making the OS more mouse- and keyboard-friendly.

Ever since the Start menu was shown off, everyone has been wondering when we will see it return to the OS and, according to Wzor, the answer will be this fall.

Whatever. . .Got used to using the Start screen and see no reason at this point to change, heck my iMac 27 using OS X Merrick doesn't have a menu. . .so can see no reason for one on 8.1.1. . .to each their own though. . .

    Yucky.

The greater irony is that the user base that said that the Start Screen was just a giant Windows Phone, the start menu will quite literally allow you to have the Start Screen size of Windows Phone. So in the end, it's right back at square one...

lol, 8.1.2 or Windows 8.1 update update. Hopefully there will be an on off setting. I'm happy with the current Start Screen and I don't think I would use that Start menu.

What's the difference in Win 8.1 Cleartype? I don't notice any changes in appearance or handling?

ClearType font smoothing changed in Win 8 to use greyscale antialiasing. In Win 7 ClearType used subtle colors for the antialiasing. Some fonts at certain zoom levels look bad in Win 8.

Well I'm quite happy with ClassicShell. I like the ability to modify my start menu as I like it. Funny thing is if MS hadn't taken it away I probably would never have needed anything like ClassicShell and now I really like it. I still don't know anything about the metro apps I guess with the win 8.1update2 perhaps these apps will work like Gadgets on the desk top that might be OK I'll just have to see. I know I sure didn't like them taking over my desktop in full screen.

Most of my preinstalled app tiles suddenly don't load. Clicking on them takes me to their screen and immediately returns me to the start screen. Any thoughts.
