Forbes Magazine Warning On 8.1

Thanks gator2013, I wanted to post that here but don't have that access yet.

How very turdish of them.... they seem hell bent on becoming a parody of themselves....

This Forbes story just came out and is very late in my opinion and confused me for a bit as it seemed like Microsoft was just going to toss Windows 8 under the bus like previous OS's that flopped badly.

All they did was shorten the life cycle of what should be considered an out dated version at this point.
Yes, you should be running the latest version. I see nothing wrong with this.

I think people are making a bigger issue out of this than it actually is.
The largest majority of people (meaning all consumers outside of corporate environments) should update anyway.
corporate (what I am sure, little there is) should not have much issue with upgrading to the update either once the patch is in place for WSUS over SSL.

Let's keep in mind, that is over SSL connections, which may affect even less people than eluded to.

It's a mole hill they are trying to turn into a Mount Everest.

This is more slam Win8 for the sake of slamming Win8 for any reason there is to be found.

One would think it would get a bit old after a while.

I think it's more a case of people not being too keen on the arbitrariness of it. Suggests to me of a team that is totally out of control. I mean, who the fork do these people think they are... and, more importantly, who in their right mind would want to continue to do business with these people, now or in the future.

It's as if they haven't learnt a damn thing.

But, that's just my little opinion is all.

Well, Mr. Gordon Kelly (contributor), you didn’t contribute jack as far as I’m concerned. You keep mentioning Windows 8. You forgot to differentiate that 8.1 is in fact a totally different edition of Windows since it is a new kernel edition. The likes of the Steven Jay Sinofsky affair who was responsible for the all-too-soon release of W8 has been taken care of and taken care of quickly. MS would like to forget W8 ever existed. Unfortunate incidents like this happen within companies, so what’s new? Let’s move on to the present 8.1.

MS is changing SP(#) with new terminology of Update(#), therefore just as in the past one could not download SP2 without having SP1. Keeping systems up to date is wise and really nothing new.

Oh contraire fellow forumeer. Not arbitrary whatsoever.

While researching for my last post I came across this pic. This is Sinofski releasing 7. He should be your target of frustration. This is the guy that delivered 7 and other MS products that we so much liked. Yes? Fantastic job on that, but obviously he didn’t do enough market research before delivering 8 or didn’t listen to marketing department as a whole with consumer evaluation. He pushed it out the door way too soon. However, he knew, as well as the company overall, that the market was going mobile and needed to develop a touch-centric mobile OS across all devices that works just as good with mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals. A rather brilliant concept by a rather brilliant software design engineer, but obviously not a very good manager, or rather executive. He must have really angered the board.

Don’t really want to use this analogy, but I can think of no other. Having raised 6 children, I know enough not to wean infants off of milk with meat. Firstly their digestive system can’t handle it and secondly no means to chew. One must gradually lead them up to it. Same thing with this new concept of computing. That’s why the likes of 8.1 and UI updates following. It’s not arbitrary to me.

Like you, that's just my little opinion is all.

One of the areas that has fascinated us the most, is the approach that ... fans have had to the product, and the energy they have spent defending the product despite the shortcomings and limitations... it reminds us of the famous Stockholm Syndrome

W8 wasn't actually a bad concept - but the manner in which it was flogged definitely was Marketing error 101 -- anybody with the slightest nous about marketing could have predicted that the way W8 was sold to the public was totally rubbish.

Nothing wrong in a Mobile centric OS -- but it's obvious that this should have been a boot up / configuration choice -- on a Tablet use the Tiles / touch version at boot, on a desktop boot straight to desktop unless the user wants to use the Mobile (tiles) straight away.

Windows 8.1 is what SHOULD have been presented -- update 1 merely improves it.

People like FORBES and especially GARTNER should stick to Wall st etc -- their predictions of what happens in I.T are about the same as what you could ascertain by RANDOM GUESSING. Windows 8.1 IS NOT GOING AWAY -- all people have to do is update (FREE) to windows 8.1 update 1 then the updates etc will behave normally.

As for the Start menu -- Ms perhaps should have weaned people off it -- I'm quite surprised by the amount of web chatter that topic caused -- but by using custom toolbars etc you can actually make a more flexible system than by Ms's fairly rigid menu system.

If you are in marketing and have a product / feature well liked and used by over 1 Billion people it really doesn't make much sense to remove it at a single stroke without warning customers and suggesting what to use as an alternative.

So Windows 8 --Marketing disaster -- Ms abandoning W8.1 --NOT TRUE if you simply do the update.

Finally IGNORE any predictions concerning I.T from above all GARTNER and FORBES.

This is a total non-story. If choose not to apply updates through windows update that is your decision. I don't have Windows 8.1.1 - I have 8.1 with various patches which were automatically applied. Why Microsoft should support someone's decision to arbitrarily not install some update is beyond me. Either you take their recommendations or don't. It is your choice.
