Microsoft ends support for custom domains in free email...

For years, one of the best bargains in tech was Microsoft's free Custom Domains service, which allowed anyone to assign a custom domain to free Hotmail and Outlook.com accounts. Effective today, Microsoft has begun "winding down" the service.

Microsoft has stopped accepting new registrations for its free Custom Domains service, effective immediately. The move was announced today on the Windows Live Admin Center page, where users manage custom email addresses

We will continue to support the ability to log in to Outlook.com with your existing custom domain email address, but you will no longer be able to add or remove accounts in your domain.

Why not? If the ability is already there and setup, why go out of their way to deliberately disable it?

It's alright for them to say migrate your account to Office 365, but Microsoft Exchange accounts are way too over-priced compared to other email solutions. For non-business users they'd be better off ditching Microsoft altogether and just pointing their MX records back to a traditional IMAP/POP mailbox, because there's no way they're going to pay Exchange prices just for personal email with calendar/contact syncing. And if they used Skype with their custom domains, I guess that'll mean creating a new Skype account also.

Hi there
For Personal users there's so many other email clients anyway -- thunderbird for one. In any case who wants to PAY for office 365 -- might be cheap in the USA - but in Europe WITH 20% VAT -- forget it -- I'm still using Outlook 2010 but Thunderbird is a perfectly acceptable alternative if you don't have / want Ms Office.

Available in loads of different languages and for Linux as well as windows.

Mozilla Thunderbird - Reclaim Your Inbox

A few other ones.

(I'm on the war path this year : these are my pet hates for 2014)

1) SQUARE plates in Restaurants -- Bring back Round plates !!) I'll set up an online petition -- NO SQUARE PLATES PLEASE.

2) Subscription Software. !!!!

It's not an email client issue, it's a mailbox issue for people with their own domain names. Windows Live Admin Centre allowed people to use Outlook.com/Microsoft Account as the mailbox for their own domain names. What client they use to retrieve mail from their Oultook.com account, makes no odds.

P.S. I'm on-board with 'NO to subscription software!', but I like square plates.

As Microsoft has asked their users to use Office 365, Outlook users are looking for other alternatives also especially cloud based email services. I also looked for alternative and read a blog where Banckle.Email App is offering 5 free custom domains which i found very useful at this point of time and i am going to try their services.

Square plates in restaurants.
Maybe they're following the lead of some other restaurants who introduced square bottomed glasses.
This was done to stop 'rings' being left on their table tops. LOL

I've never really used any other email client. I used the client in netscape/mozilla/seamonkey before thunderbird, but it's the same thing.

I'm fine with subscription software as long as the price is right. Office 365 gas always struck me as a good deal. But I have multiple devices, multiple users and refuse to pirate software.
