Microsoft requires migration to Windows 8.1 Update within 5 weeks

Microsoft yesterday confirmed that Windows 8.1 users must upgrade to Windows 8.1 Update, the refresh that begins rolling out to customers today.

"Failure to install this Update will prevent Windows Update from patching your system with any future updates starting with updates released in May 2014," said Michael Hildebrand of Microsoft in a Monday blog.

Seems a little fast to me personally.

As an aside, I upgraded to 8.1 yesterday and it automatically put me on update 1.

Hi there
From what I've seen so far - upgrading is a "No Brainer" -- especially from Windows 8.0

What IS a shame though is that unless you have TechNet / msdn access you can't seem get an iso to do a clean installation -- I think THIS omission will come back to haunt Ms later

Why they don't release ISO's is just beyond me - I can't think of any conceivable reasons - and often a clean Windows re-install solves a whole slew of problems - especially these days where unless you are incredibly careful downloading ANYTHING is a minefield - sites deliberately go out of their way to confuse the downloader with all sorts of toolbars / special offers / zillions of links to OTHER software than the one he / she wants etc.

Sometimes a clean re-install is the only way -- I remind people of the nasty piece of adware I saw on someone's PC recently -- BUBBLEDOCK --if you get something like that only a totally fresh windows install will guarantee there's no tiny bit of it left in your system.

(Little article here -- enjoy !!) - The best method is still a total Windows re-install as this thing goes REALLY deep into a system - even though typical virus / malware removal tools report it as gone).

TechNet and MSDN are pay for subscription services. TechNet is actually being discontinued. If you don't have any Windows 8.1 install media you can't do a clean install. What OS did your PC ship with and did you make any recovery media?

If you do a clean install you'll have to reinstall 8.0 and then upgrade to 8.1 though the store. I'm not sure what happens if you try to do a Reset or Refresh on your current system.

I totally dislike the idea that we are forced to get this update.. I like the way it was, new updates aren't the greatest.. I paid for my system to work a certain way and they are making me change it to what >they< want. To me it's just wrong, but what can ya' do? Would be stupid to have an OS that doesn't have new updates...

If I cannot actually purchase the physical disc, then I insist on an ISO being available.

This is not an option, its availability should be mandatory.

All I see on TechNet is the Enterprise trial, and that's not satisfactory for my needs.

So, is an ISO coming, I wonder? Or not?

Or will I have to rely on a 'leaked' one?

Because, as I said, not having one isn't an option for me.

Wenda.

TechNet is a subscription service. If you are a subscriber you can download the Windows 8.1 with update ISO. If you are not, the only available download is trial software like the one you mentioned. There is no Windows 8.1 trial other than Enterprise that I know of. In the past Microsoft has not offered a free ISO download, not that I know of anyway. I hope they break that trend but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

That being the case, the 8.1.1 update should be made available as a downloadable .exe or self-extracting archive, along the lines of the XP Service Packs. One of the 8.1.1 previews I tried actually was in this format (sadly it would not install on this machine).

For those with no internet, or a slow or bandwidth-limited connection, this is more than just common-sense, it's pretty-well essential.

In a closely related issue, I have also found it impossible to source standalone SP installers for Vista (any ideas??). Every link I've tried leads to a pirated copy of Vista with the SPs included, and that's not what I want. And downloading 2Gb or more of Service Packs every time I re-install simply isn't going to happen. Hence my Vista setup runs no SP at all.

Not good, MS.

Wenda.

EDIT: I've just discovered that there is indeed such a beast. I was unable to find it previously, but it's now at the MS Download Centre. So, all good. :thumb::thumbsup:

Perhaps more precisely can not get more support from Microsoft. Reportedly update / patch can only be installed later on Windows with build 9600.17031 or higher.

LOL! That would be quite necessary. I read right past his first half of the question.

I answered him in another thread that it would most likely have the update since OEMs get it way before we do.
