I re-enabled all of them. I did not reboot.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had disabled only one service on msconfig - App Readiness - because my pc was booting slower with it enabled. When I re-enabled and tried the update, it worked! I really appreciate you posting your experience. Thanks again.

How do I give you a rep for this?

    I got them here:

There are 5 downloads - including KB291355. Install the other four first - then the big one (KB2919355) PS be sure all Services under msconfig are enabled. That seemed to be my problem.

I have updated successfully with the 8.1 update this morning.
I like having the x close button now on my apps, however I have noticed after closing them with the x, they remain showing as running in task manager... showing 0% cpu usage, but still they are there.

I had noticed the same, already. Most of those apps will also only consume 0.1MB after a while, but I noticed that some will remain in memory and use +100MB. If you have a lot of those apps in your memory, it can quickly use up a lot of the PC's resources.

Although, this time, the PC will go to sleep after its appointed time, even when there are apps still showing up in the Task Manager. With 8.1, I always had to make sure all apps were closed, else it wouldn't go to sleep on its own. So, Microsoft did fix that problem for me.

Thanks, yes that is how I would close them completely prior to this update, so I guess in order to continue to close completely I need to continue to do that, rather than using the new close x option... hmm...

As far as I can tell closing them with the X puts them in suspend. The drag and flip closes them.

Okey Dokey . . . I've been holding off updating to Windows 8.1 because of the "sleep issue" https://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep.html (it's a huge thread, folks). I was about ready to jump onto Windows 8.1 to see if the sleep and NumLock issues have...
