How to Update to Windows 8.1 Update on April 8th 2014

Can you possibly remember which ones? And, did you restart between re-enabling them and installing the update?

Done that! I spent 3 hours to end up with black screen and 3 Remote Control pop-ups which wouldn't go away. Finally had to use Macrium reflect image made just before Tuesday's updates and am back where I started. So much for Microsoft Support.
Sorry to hear that. It's unfortunate. But then I am not running MalWareBytes, Win Patrol, Hitman, CryptoPrevent, Classic Shell or Rainmeter.

I went to Windows Update, selected 1 update available (about 800mb), downloaded and rebooted in about 3 minutes. Everything ok.

I re-enabled all of them. I did not reboot.

A friend of mine also had an error message when he tried to install the big update.

I managed to fix it, so I'm also going to post my solution here. I can't be sure if it will solve everyone's problems, but fingers crossed.

    I did following thing:

    1. Ran Windows Update Troubleshoot.
    2. Used Glary Utilities to make sure the registry was cleaned and all temporary files were deleted. (Also the Windows Update files the PC had already downloaded.)

And then I did a restart of the PC and started Windows Update again. The PC downloaded the file again and then the installation started again. This time, everything went as it should have.

Maybe those who still have trouble installing it, can try my solution, and hopefully, it's the thing that works for you guys as well.

Uh huh . . . I saw that, Jimbo, but my subscription has expired and I'm told by MS that Technet will be no longer. So, unless I can dig up a few gazillion bucks, I won't be subscribing to MSDN where it's also available.

So far, it seems the updates worked on both of my 'puters, so it's not like I'll need it any time soon, but it would be good to have for updating my friend's computer. She's in no hurry to upgrade, so I'll just hurry up and wait some more.

At worst it should only take around 30 mins or so -- time well spent if the update doesn't go to plan so you can always restore your system.

How is it so many knowledgeable people -- they probably FORGET more things about Windows than I'll ever LEARN in my entire lifetime - just don't take backups. (These days nobody should keep data etc in the same partition as the Windows OS).

Jimbo, the first thing I did was to create the recovery disks when I bought this computer. When it decided it didn't want to run properly after upgrading to Windows 8.1, I tried to use the recovery disks, but the thing just crashed and burned and there I was.

Luckily I was still in warranty and HP fixed it for me, but then even they forgot to finish the job and I had to call support when I got the computer back.

So, after seeing all these problems, not only will I be creating recovery disks, but I will also be creating an image of the system; however, I'm not even sure I could have restored from an image when she crashed.

It would be nice if everyone had an easy update experience like most of us. The only thing I did re updating was hide and refuse download of the malicious software update, I never download that. I find it itself to be Malicious. Had it once years ago, worst experience ever, never again.

Dumb question, but have you done what someone suggested to me: Right click on the little window at bottom left, click on Programs and Features>View Installed Updates, then type KB2919355 in the "Search Programs and Features" box?

    Grasping at straws again . . .

The updated ISO is currently available on MSDN for customers who have access. The updated ISO will be available for Volume License customers on 4/14. Based on what I'm hearing right now, e-distributors including windows.com and microsoftstore.com should have updated ISOs available by 4/30.
I think you'll find that none of those will be easily obtainable for the average Joe. If that's what your thinking. I do believe all of the above are paid for services.
Windows.com and Microsoftstore.com are paid for services? An ISO is downloadable, right? I'm confused Alpha.
