Have you been back today, John? Look at what has been done to that statement since I first read it on the Technet Blog yesterday or the day before at http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfepla...ncements.aspx:

Whew, thought I'd never get the strike through to happen! Since the Technet Blog is by a Microsoftie, I'm betting this is pretty official. There's a pretty good bit of info in that blog too, which may be helpful to those who haven't succeeded with the update yet.

As far as I know if it says that you have update 1 installed.

Open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Then look at BuildLabEx Is it 9600.17041?

EDIT: It's actually still 8.1 not 8.1.1, 8.1.1 is just something some of use called 8.1 with update 1
And now you tell me, Alpha! Sheesh! At least I got a good laugh at myself, or you, as the case may be. Folks have been calling it 8.1.1, so I just figured . . . I have seen it called Windows 8.1 Update 1 too. I think?
Microsoft just calls it Windows 8.1 Update. They don't even put a 1 after it.

ain't no way I would have even upgraded 7 to 8 had it not been for the ability to retain ALL my programs.

Anyway, I'm gona test that w8.1 with update 1 iso next. It may not matter much since this time I'm just re installing 8.1 w/update over my 8.1

Well I got the thing installed using the burned ISO, had to go through the whole damned process of entering the retail key to activate pro, and the media center key to install that again, but ALL my stuff was as before, checked the build, it wasn't 17041, it was 17031, so ran MS update, it found 5 updates, incl the update 1, strange cause this ISO is supposed to incl the update?, but this time update 1 was only 128mg, not the 800 something.

D/L'ed the updates (all of them at one time) and ran the install, ALL went OK, I rechecked the build and now says 17041......!! hell it only took 6 hrs, smirks.

So cheer up bob burns, it can be done, one way or another .

You got it done by using Retail key's and not OEM key's ?

to get the thing to even install I had to use some MS install key, if you need it I can post it, its not illegal, the thing is to "activate" it after you need your retail key, the one you "paid for" I bought the Pro key way back when MS was offering the Pro keys it for 15 bucks. The media player key must also be re entered to get that back if you go the route i took.

I did that cause all the other "solutions" didn't do it, even after recovering a day older image it still wouldn't work that way, I kept getting the errors on that one update, so I used the setup DVD I burned from this ISO, it took all day with all the "getting ready's, setting up's, and almost ready" but I'm content now, everything works, and all my stuff is as it was. Even the start menu I use.
