Just updated my laptop, no issues. Did my desktop earlier, and no issues there either. Looks good BTW.

    Same here... it's annoying.
I think your windows component store is corrupt. Try running these.

DISM to Fix Component Store Corruption:
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

Try running scannow at least three times:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

Error Code 0x80073712 occurs in Windows Update or Microsoft Update
I did the MS Fix it and the DISM to Fix Component Store Corruption with Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Still have the same error code, update did not install !

I know it's a stretch to ask, but have you made sure there are absolutely no more updates for your Windows 8.1? And, you are updating Windows 8.1 and not 8.0, right?

    Grasping at straws . . .

Did you try updating everything but the 8.1 update, reboot then go back and install the 8.1 update?

After doing previous updates I did a reboot. Then 8.1.1 was there, not before.

So finally came my turn to try update and even that after forcing search for them. I had 8.1 updates since they leaked (17041) It said "downloading 5 files" of 143.5 MB total. Downloaded them at about 7 Mb/s and after few minutes they got installed. After a reboot it shows only 3 updates installed. KB2939087, KB2933809 and KB2942844. As far I can see, those are not the same as those leaked ones but same totally new. One of them is update to Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, the other 2 I didn't catch what they are for.
May I then safely assume that leaked updates were right on the money and nothing has changed since ?
Anyway, everything went smooth as honey, no hitch at all.

Okey Dokey . . . I've been holding off updating to Windows 8.1 because of the "sleep issue" https://www.eightforums.com/general-support/28226-windows-8-1-refuses-sleep.html (it's a huge thread, folks). I was about ready to jump onto Windows 8.1 to see if the sleep and NumLock issues have...
