Microsoft to Release Windows 8 Professional Plus, Ultimate Versions

Microsoft has just made available for download the Consumer Preview flavor of its Windows 8 operating system, yet people are already interested in learning what the future might have in store for them.

Apparently, there might be nine different versions of Windows 8 set to arrive on shelves, at least this is what some enthusiasts found in the Consumer Preview’s registry.

Among them, we can count the Ultimate SKU that was rumored only a few days ago to have been scrapped from books.

Microsoft hasn’t made official info on its plans on the matter, but it appears that there will indeed be more Windows flavors, including some unheard of before.

The full list of Windows 8 SKUs reportedly includes:

Windows 8 Starter edition
Windows 8 Home Basic Edition
Windows 8 Home Premium edition
Windows 8 Professional edition
Windows 8 Professional Plus edition
Windows 8 Enterprise Edition
Windows 8 Ultimate edition
Windows 8 ARM edition

Hi there
It's about time the Professional edition was killed off -- it really doesn't do anything the Home premium doesn't do other than give you XP Mode.

Even Languages can only be installed for ONE language.

Ultimate / Enterprise systems are fine -- multi language packs, decent server accesses etc etc.

Cheers

You may not see the XP Mode since the present version of the MS VPC and XP Mode both were found incompatible with 8! Apparently MS has something else in the works if anything along those lines.

The Pro Plus reminds me of 98SE Plus or 95PLUS! in that sense of a new flavor with just a few more items included rather then downloaded/installed separately! The Pro Plus is also an inbetween in pricing between Pro and Ultimate editions as well. hhhmm...

Starter and Basic as usual are mainly for developing countries.(or those on tight budgets)

Jimbo, but actually you can't use legally windows 8 Home basic, or starter in a small office or even for your little conveinient store computer os. For it you'll need a version with a correct lisence.

(That's the way how microsoft makes money)

And how you join a domain with Premium ?

I would be going for the Pro Plus if not Ultimate here. That or Pro over the Home Premium which unfortunately would lack some of the things I would end up needing available here.

Hi there
presumably if I wanted to join a Domain it would be a Work type computer -- where Ultimate / Enterprise would be more appropriate.

Also where I work people want different languages --for example even in the SAME office in Brussels there's the inevitable discussions between the French and Flemish speaking people plus they always want some facilities in English too --like Office with switchable Language packs.

Pro wont do this .

Cheers
jimbo

Small Business don't purchase Ultimate, to expensive, Enterprise is off their league. I own a small chop since 30 years , I serve only small business, I'm in Quebec ( quite bilingual in Canada ) , and none of my customers request a PC that he can switch in French or English. Here for SBS, Pro it's what customers ask for.

I'm not running any small business but a home user and still run the Ultimate edition. Typically while Home Premium or Pro are the most commonly sold machines to home users an edition is selected by the features provided regardless of where you are as far as the individual user.

As for any business large or small often seeing numerous machines volume licensing for the edition the company finds most suitable for their office or other workers is selected. Of course you also need to look at the companies still seeing older networks and running 2000 Pro/XP Pro looking now to upgrade.

I don't upgrade PC running XP or 2000, they are too old. I sell them brand new Dell, ( we are talking business here ) The most popular for business customer cost around $ 500 and come only with Pro or Premium, I don't see myself changing them for another OS + install.
Anyway, I don't see where is the problem for peoples if Microsoft continue to offer Pro, but I see a huge one for myself if they don't

I wasn't referring to hardware but OS wise. Obviously a business planning to upgrade into a new version of Windows will be inversting in new pcs as well.

The Enterprise Evaluation edition sounds like something more on the lines of a developer's version for network builing and likely won't see any retail application. The ARM and Pro Plus however will be two brand editions to the retail lineup.

The emphasis seen with the ARM and Metro UI is focusing on Touch Screen technologies overall as well as tablet and Windows Phone. A few currently running tv series have implemented touch screen presentation into the shows since 7 but are emphasizing it a little more lately. Two shows in particular are NCIS LA and Hawaii 5.0.
