Microsoft to highlight One Windows progress at Build 2014

What's on tap for Microsoft's Build conference this week? Here's what we know and what we think we know.

While Microsoft execs have made substantial progress in the past couple of years toward breaking down silos inside the company, there's still a long road ahead.

This year's Microsoft Build conference, which kicks off in San Francisco on April 2, will highlight how far the company has come -- and also shed more light on how far it has yet to go -- toward delivering "One Windows."

(Microsoft published the list of sessions for the conference on the Build site on March 31.)

At the developer confab this week, officials are expected to disclose fully the feature sets of the Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8 Update 1 operating systems. They also, according to sources, will share a bit about the next major version of Windows -- Windows 9, codenamed "Threshold," aka Windows 9, which is supposedly due to arrive in the spring of 2015.

I was expecting a pre-beta leak... but with all the shenanigans happening around that.... ???

- hopefully DP may will be demo'd at //BUILD/....and made available soon therafter.

Expect Microsoft to unveil its vision for Windows 9 at the Build 2014 developer conference in April 2014, with a release planned for a year later. Microsoft partners will be getting a pre-beta version of Windows Developer Preview 9 soon, we understand. Thus those partners will have seen the earliest version of Windows 9 before the Build conference this April.

They were actually planning 8 before 7 was released like they always have with past OSs and most likely started coding 8 before 7 hit the shelves. Any successful business plans ahead. The biggest factor is watching markets. Forecasting a particular market growth is of utmost importance. I think MS was a little late in seeing the decrease of tower PCs and the great increase of mobile devices, although they started coding for touch back in 7. The iPad, cell phones, and readers hurled that market ahead greatly.

Windows 7 improved on Vista's touch-screen capabilities by fully integrating touch-screen capabilities into the NT kernel itself, although not too many used the touch capabilities on the desktop. Now we have the Desktop app playing 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] fiddle to the Start Screen which replaces the Start Menu. A complete role reversal.

I think they pushed 8 out the door too fast. Too big of a change for many. I think this was a big doing of Sinofski and the reason he was asked to leave. Then they hurled 8.1 out the door within months of 8's release to fix the mistakes.

You can pretty much bet they started coding 9 straightway.

A couple of paragraphs from the article:

Another hot button at Build is likely to be the touch-first versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Windows 8/8.1 -- the app suite I've been calling "Gemini." Last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Microsoft execs will talk about this suite, the Windows complement to the just-announced Microsoft Office for iPad suite, during Build 2014. Microsoft execs showed a brief glimpse of the Gemini PowerPoint app at last year's Build conference, calling it an alpha. Officials also said last year that Windows 8 users should expect the touch-first Office suite to debut some time in calendar 2014.

I haven't heard whether Microsoft plans to allow the public to test the Gemini suite or if the company will just deliver it as a finished downloadable suite without a public beta/preview. But Microsoft needs this suite of apps in order to do away with the Desktop in Windows -- as is rumored to be happening in the spring of 2015 with the aforementioned" modern" version of Windows 9 for tablets and Windows Phones.

I obtained a copy of Office Pro 2013 about a year ago to spark a thought. It was just an intuitive thought at the time. Not to boast, but in a post about a year ago I stated that MS would most likely be writing a Modern/Metro version of Office to eventually omit the Desktop app/portal > Perhaps it won’t be included by 9, but I doubted that. And here we are. It would be a rather bold move by MS indeed. Not to worry, though. Windows 7 and 8.1 will be around for a while to ready for a rather big transition.

Nice. A Start Menu, and modern apps can open in a Window on the desktop will be made available as an update. Don't know if it's Windows 8.1 Update or a future update. See video starting at 03:09:00.
