I have a portable Linux on a 128GB flash drive. I can rescue up to 100GB of data from a system where the OS went belly up. Plus it is a beautiful system to work with. Very fast for the internet and I use a few nifty Linux programs for e.g. video editing, etc. Since I have access to every partition that's installed on the PC, I can move the data back and forth and between.
Other than just playing around with it, I haven't done anything with my WTG. I can see where it could be useful to recover files etc. I have access to Windows 8 Enterprise and an easy way to make one so I've done it. The only drag is its fusy about what thumb drives meet the requirements. It won't use the new 128 gig Lexar S23 USB3 JumpDrive I just bought, but its fine with an old laptop drive in an external enclosure. I'll likely make up some new DaRT thumb drives too.

I got a 128GB PNY for $49.95. The cheapest offer was $43.95 but I misses that. It is very fast - see pic below. This is the one I am watching. When it goes on sale, I will get it. Check the specs. They also have 240 and 480GB models - for real money, LOL.

It is really strange that 8.1 does not install on a flash drive. With my Linux Mint Mate I had no problem at all to install it on my PNY and a couple of smaller Kingston Data Traveller. Was a 15 minute affair.

I had tried a Kinston 64 gig thumb drive too, it didn't like that one either. There are certified for Windows To Go thumb drives out there, their just not cheap

I've only just started buying thumb drives over 16 gig. I've got about 20 kicking around. some 1's, 2's, 4's, 8's, 16's a 32 gig and a 64 gig. Most of them are for doing Windows install's. I make a custom install drive for each PC. Then another one with drivers, one for each PC etc.

Kingston is my preferred brand, all but about two of the ones I own are Kingston drives. I've only ever had one fail on me. Some of the ones I have are years and years old and still work fine. A this point I'll probably just redo the current WTG setup on my external hard drive. A thumb drive would have been nice and really portable is all.
