I guess I should have said, If you have windows 8 and not installed the first 8.1 update. Would you have to install the first 8.1 update to install the upcoming 8.1 update?

It depends on what you have as install media? If all you have is the update by itself, then yes, you'll have to work your way up to 8.1 and then install the update 1. If Microsoft releases a full Windows 8.1 ISO with update 1 integrated into it then no. You'll be able to do a clean install with that, assuming you have a product code to enter that is. Right now 8.0 to 8.1 is a store update and update 1 is done though Windows update. Microsoft may roll update 1 into what you get though the 8.1 Store update. A lot of it is just guess work at this point so we'll just have to wait and see.

It would stand to reason that any ISO or disk version of Windows, made after April 8, would have all of it incorporated. But than, we are talking MS.

Iím hoping it is individual optional updates because I donít want no stinkiní Xs on my Store apps to close them out along with a few other additions I saw in the leak. If it is not an SP1 update via Windows Update or the Store and it be a stand-alone edition called 8.2 or whatever, I want an ISO even if I have to pay a fee to download from their servers. Thatís if I decide to upgrade to it. It's really going to get my goat if they don't offer an ISO to the general public. At least a download. Not understanding why itís just being offered to MSDN subscribers. I went and spent money obtaining 8 Pro OEM just to find out that they released 8.1 free just a few months later. Luckily for me the upgrade went ok via the Store, but bottom line I would much prefer fresh installing so as to know what I have and to have repair media.

It'll be up on bit torrent etc within hours of it going up on MSDN. It won't be me, but someone will upload it for sure.
You know that someone will. Itís inevitable. Not releasing ISOs IMO promotes pirating rather than not. Thatís all Iíll say on that.

I'd bet that there are some laptops and machines with OEM windows already being sold with newest updates. They are not going to magically crawl from under the rock on April 8th. Most manufacturers had to start early to install OEM Windows by now and are not going to keep them under the counter 'till that date.

The current 8.1 ISO on MSDN doesn't have update 1 in it. They are only RTM and don't even have the GA rollups in them. They will likely disappear if new one with update 1 is added. The old Enterprise ISO's were removed when new ones with the GA rollups in them were added. Now's the time to hunt one up without update 1 if that's what you want.

Thanks, but no thanks, Kerry. I'm not going to try hunting down a safe copy via any torrent houses of ill-repute. Isn't going to happen. I'll make one like Mustang did before I do that.

I'm ok for now. Just not understanding MS when it comes to upgrading lately that's all.

I totally understand. It's not something I'd be in a big hurry to do. A last resort kind of deal. Getting my Microsoft MVP and complimentary MSDN subscription was a god send for me. Forget about the product codes, just being able to get official unmodified clean ISO's is an incredible bonus. Now when I end up working on a friend or relatives PC I have clean media that I can use with no worries that it could come back to haunt me. I'm sure a lot of forum member can relate to the classic "Disks, what disks?, It didn't come with any disks" response from the person dropping off the PC to be fixed.
