Windows 8.1 is better in almost EVERY WAY especially if you don't like or use the "Metro" interface. Boot to the desktop directly.
My Windows 8 Pro x64 boots into desktop directly too. I'm holding on to it and I'll be on the lookout for the 8.2 update reviews.

    GL & Cheers
Somehow recall getting this to work on 8.0 back then, before 3rd-party apps... If I remember correctly the desktop was initiated by the AV splash screen - but don't quote me on this will have to see if I can replicate it when I get home later

I have a little Acer Aspire One netbook I just put my copy of 8 on. I haven't gone to 8.1 yet for two reasons:

    1) I keep reading you can lose your local account if you aren't real careful when setting it up, I have no desire to use the store, or connect my MS Live ID. I am content with a local account.

    2) The biggest reason is the size.... Almost 3GB would take almost 5 (just checked) hours on my connection to download.

Sorry to be a pedant (and doubly so if I am wrong). 3gb is 3.221.225.472 bytes or 25.769.803.776 bits. At 55kbps this would take around 5 1/2 days. I guess your speed must be better than you thought (or my arithmetic worse of course). Cheers

Your better off to leave well-enough-alone. I had my girlfriend upgrade and all I hear is bitching about things not working now.

It will be a clean install when I finally get a round toit. I'm holding off waiting to see if a new ISO shows up on MSDN with update 1 included.

    Hi there

MSDN Subscription is EXPENSIVE for normal people - so that's not a usually available resource. TechNet was fine but it's closed to new subscribers and existing subscribers will be blocked as soon as the subscriptions expire -- mine goes in October so still a few months left.

So for most people one has to hope that Ms does release ISO's via normal channels such as the Ms site itself.

    Cheers

Yeah, I know all that Jimbo. All I'm saying is I have that option so I'm waiting. It's too bad Microsoft killed TechNet, like you said MSDN is too pricy for most people to afford. It's also a shame that its so hard to acquire official Microsoft ISO's. I've never understood that? You still need a valid product code so its not going to promote piracy. And those that do that will find a way to get it anyway.

Just a curious thought, and I am unsure if it is possible, but has anyone had an installation of Windows Xp and Upgraded to Vista, then 7, then 8, and finally 8.1? Or is that not even possible. I am assuming not as the hardware has changed a bunch from 2001 to 2014 (Now).
