Nvidia: EOL Windows driver support for legacy products

After Release 340, any subsequent Windows driver release starting with Release 343 will cease to support the products listed in this section.

The Release 340 drivers will continue to support these products until April 1, 2016, and the NVIDIA support team will continue to address driver issues for these products in driver branches up to and including Release 340. However, future driver enhancements and optimizations in driver releases after Release 340 will not support these products.

Yes thanks for letting us know. It's sad to see that one's dual-core GPU (GTX295), which was revolutionary at the time, being basically two graphics cards in one unit, will soon be regarded as prehistoric and only five years ago it was hailed as being at the cutting edge of all GPU's.

Sigh. I'd better start saving for a new machine soon, before I too expire and get thrown on the scrap heap.

State of the Art to State of the Ark in a blink of the eye.......so sad, but that's life, and I used to swear that Sony Betamax was the be-all-and-end-all and now it all goes on a microchip.

Now where on Earth did I put my Abacus.....?!!

A previous announcement of this kind, which promptly led to flash video support being broken on 5000 series cards, was why I switched from Nvidia to ATI and have never gone back. Nvidia are at least better than Intel at supporting older devices, but not by much.

Years ago I switched the other way, ATI to Nvidia for the reason that ATI's drivers were forever acting up plus they were so slow at issuing drivers compatible with the newer OS's which I was then beta testing. Oh well, c'est la vie. ATI used to be excellent prior to that, made locally too, but not too sure about that since AMD took them over.

Two of my systems fall in this realm, but no big deal they are both old (ten years at least), and had planned on giving them away. . .

Same here, years ago I worked in a factory adjacent to ATI in Concord Ont. and was given one card over the fence. After fighting with it (it was on Win 3.1) for several weeks I returned it and shelled a lot of money for a Matrox and wowed never to have ATI again because of drivers. Relented only after AMD took over and now still using HD3850 Top although it took them couple of weeks to make driver for Win 8.1 and called it "legacy".
Frankly, it's futile to expect them to keep making new drivers for everything for any OS that might come out but it should not take great effort to modify older drivers to fit new OS. Many drivers for other products were modified by private individuals, so large companies can do it even easier.

Wow - I'd love Nvidia to hand me a couple of Titan Black's over the fence......LOL They are only around a mere $2700 for 2 at the moment. Just kidding of course as they wouldn't even work in this rig and Nvidia or whomever actually makes them is not local anyway.
Well at least my GTX295 is still behaving itself and is supported until 2016. not that I ever need support and it works just fine in Win 8.1.

ATI was a "new kid in the block" at that time and I had just about enough with Hercules and such, so when I got first x386 figured to go to something new but all I got was problems. Autocad needed own drivers so did few other specialized SW and it was unusable like that. There were cheaper alternative cards at that time, almost unknown makes but they worked everywhere but ATI wouldn't.

I just looked them up. AMD still use the old ATI plant/offices here, actually in Markham, Ontario. (For me, a down-towner, it's all "somewhere due west"....!!)

Good for you. I do similarly with my roots in the U.K., although I left there over 40 years ago. The Sun? Ouch....I read the Globe and Mail, wouldn't touch anything to do with Sun Media, they are so biased. Sun has its own TV channel here now, in HD no less, but don't watch as they spout absolute drivel most of the time.
