    XP Market Share Climbs Again

Windows XP market share climbs again as customers dig their heels in- The Inquirer

"Last month, the 12-year old operating system accounted for 29.53 percent of the market, up 0.23 percent from January. On one hand, it's up only a fraction of a percent, but on the other Microsoft, which has been trying every trick in the book to lure or scare users away from Windows XP, is going to be disappointed that once again attention has been drawn away from Windows 8, which continues to underperform, despite gaining slightly, stepping out of the shadow of Vista at 0.68 percent market share."

I have to say I can't understand how it could grow. Existing users not upgrading doesn't result in increased market share unless the market is shrinking and users of later OS are more likely to abandon PCs alltogether. Perhaps it's like that - who knows....

Actually, adamf, I, too, am scratching my head how could it grow. Now speaking for myself, I do own a Windows XP SP2 ( with key) disk that I purchased years ago and never used. So it is quite obvious that, yes, I could install it on a brand new computer and activate the key. But really, how many are like that?

But it should be interesting as the date nears, what will happen. Will it be a situation of the mouse that roared?

Maybe people are using their existing XP install media to replace the OS on their new PCs.

I find it so hard to believe that people are doing this.

I think you got it right. The base is shifting.

Nothing dramatic will happen. Those users will just do business as usual. The whole April saga reminds me the W2K discussion

This report is based on a sample of users to various sites and and as traffic varies so will the statistics. I don't place much credence in such a small percentage of change but it makes good headlines.

Ah. Margin of error then. Most people I know who use XP are corporate and their users are generally only allowed intranet not internet (I work in banking IT sector and internet is usually banned for most users). These XP users would therefore be excluded in any case from such samples.
