For those that feel compelled to leave XP I made a small guide that may come in handy.

I don't have an ID on that forum so I'll ask this here... you mention the wbadmin command in your guide, but does that even exist in XP?

The Backup which was built into XP is different to wbadmin I think. The XP Backup was very good in terms of features but creates files in a .BKF format which is hard to read in Windows 8 (I don't think there is an official Microsoft way to do it; at least there wasn't last time I looked).

    Thanks for bringing that up.

If you have an XP system, can you check whether wbadmin works. I don't have an XP system. I just assumed that because it was a common command for the servers. But if it does not work, I shall correct my little guide.

I know that end of support for XP is April-8-2014. That is the second Tuesday. Will there be an update on that day?

As I understand it, XP will get any relevant patches on 8 April. Some commentators have pointed out that until the May 'Patch Tuesday', XP is actually no worse in terms of support than it would have been.

But after the April Patch Tuesday, there will be no more patches.

I'm noticing the free laplink software at the Microsoft site does not include the feature to transfer your programs. I guess you have to pay laplink for that feature and skip the freebie.

Tried opening .VHD files in Win 7 today. I go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, click on Disk Management and let it load then, right click on Disk Management and select Attach VHD.

I created a .VHD file of my Win XP desktop computer from an Acronis 2014 Premium .tib backup. But I'm running into an issue. Win 7 doesn't support .VHD files on 4KB cluster hard drives (> 2 TB), but will open the same file if copied to a 512 byte cluster hard drive (up to 2 TB). Win 8 will support .VHD files on 4 KB cluster hard drives (> 2 TB).

I'm guessing laplink will work with .VHD files, but it does matter what OS you are in and what size hard drive the .VHD file is on.
