Good-bye, Windows Phone

Yes, Microsoft is supporting Linux by way of Android. Do you really think -- with the clock running down on Microsoft's final acquisition of Nokia -- that the Finnish phone company would make such a move without Microsoft's full backing? I don't.

I think Microsoft and Nokia have made a smart move. I'm not the only one.

Hello, MS-Android. Good-bye, Windows Phone | ZDNet

LOL! :roflmao:

They haven't even announced WP8.1 or reached their goal of a "One" MS. I see this X phone getting killed pretty soon. They're dropping license fees, coming out with killer hardware and optics, and seeing over 100% y-o-y growth, this is before universal apps are even introduced. I seriously doubt they're going to just drop everything they've been working towards for the past 4 yrs.

Hi there.

I actually LIKE the Windows phone -- the Android OS gets crazy when you have quite a few apps installed on it -- I get really irritated if I have to do more than about 3 screen swipes to get an application -- there's so much BLOAT now on Android phones from almost any provider that the whole OS is a MESS - these apps can't be uninstalled either unless you get very geeky and "root" your phone -- and then things like Banking apps don't work any more. Some travel sites also won't allow you to PAY for tickets from rooted phones either - so round and round we go.

If only Ms had come out with the Windows phone earlier -- I don't think it will die --even Samsung is thinking about leaving the android platform. (If a Windows phone could be made like the S5 I'd get it in a shot).

I wonder if most detractors of the Windows phone have EVER TRIED ONE. The experience is better than you might expect. The Phones themselves are the drawback rather than the OS - although the latest Lumia is OK-ish.

What is surprising is that someone is attempting to re-finance Blackberry with the old fashioned keyboard and all -- that device to me above everything else just shouted to the entire planet that the user was a "total wage slave" 100% beholden to a boss on the other end of the phone who expected you to be 100% available 7 days a week. Buying into that lifestyle was Blackberry's mantra -- I don't think too many people want to go that route again --just let the product die.

Cheers

jimbo

Windows apps are all games and junk tools nothing from the real world and no one is developing Windows apps, Why should they? For God's sake even my small, one building Credit Union, has developed their banking app for Android and iPhone. If I can't do online banking and direct deposit with my mobile phone, why would I buy it? If I can't use my phone to purchase my bus or rapid transit ticket, and the use it as the actual pass, why would I buy it? Do windows phone even have GPS, I think they pulled that app.

..damn it is like they keep shooting themselves in the foot...

It's always about the apps. My wife got an iPad for Christmas, and without question it was the right device 100% because of the apps available for it. She works as an occupational therapist in a special needs school and to stay consistent with all of the other teachers and therapists there, she had to be able to run all of the same apps.

That's funny since Samsung is probably the greatest offender when it comes to turning Android into bloated, ugly crap. It's not their fault really... people keep buying them!

Decent Android phones are rare, but they do exist. Try a Nexus 5, a Moto X, or the amazing (considering its price) Moto G.

That said, I really hope Windows Phone can enjoy real success soon, more competition is definitely needed.

Again one of those posts I cannot comment as I would like to, out of respect for the Eight Forums rules.

Just my two €-cents:
As an ex-pat I have bank accounts with various cards in three countries. I use my Windows phones to manage those accounts and cards, for all online banking needs. In fact I have almost completely stopped using a computer and web based online banking because the banking apps work so well.

I control my home network away from home with PC Remote Pro for Windows Phone. I buy my tickets from either German or Finnish railroad's WP app, pay for the local transportation with an WP app. I make hotel reservations and pay for them with an WP app. I pay my postage with an WP app, as well as parking in selected garages.

I use Office for WP together with OneDrive to take my documents with me, edit and work with them wherever I want to. When away from home I watch both Finnish and German subscription IPTV with an app for Windows Phone. My Microsoft email accounts require two step authentication for which I have the WP authenticator app to help me to secure my email accounts.

I check how my ailing mother-in-law is doing with a WP baby monitor app, with webcam feed. My Windows phones have the best possible maps, turn-by-turn navigation, compass and extremely accurate GPS. I keep my notes and ToDo lists on practical free WP apps.

For every purpose I need an app, professionally or private, I have found at least one. To say that there are no apps for Windows Phone is of course totally BS.

Kari, but the 2 apps I use most with my Nexus are not available in 8.1 - GrooveIP for free phone calls from Europ to the US and Navigation. The MS devices do not even have GPS or GNSS. In fact, 80% of the Apps I use in Android are not available on 8.1.

The issue with Windows Phones going away is the plan to merge RT and Windows Phone for the 2015 update. MS has too many plans for Windows Phone for it to go away. The problem I have found with ZDNet is the try (probably succeed) to get more viewers by writing articles which destroy the names of products whether there is truth or not to the subject. I use to read so many articles on ZDNet and would find so many wrong findings on there site.

These are nice map programs. But which one gives you the current GPS position on the map whilst you are driving, traces your route on the map and tells you ahead of time when to turn. Radar warnings would be nice too.

I need it for an 8.1 tablet, not a phone.

No doubt MS doesn't have the amount of apps the others do for WP8 or 8/8.1, but just how many apps does one need? 1 MIL? The lesser amount of apps vs the other two is just a ploy to deride MS > Period!

Nokia Lumia 1520. I can attest that the GPS-guided driving navigation within the HERE Drive+ app, which is a Nokia branded app, works just as well as ones on Android, of which I used for years. There are others I can get for the phone.

May I suggest the 1520 so you only need to carry one device?

Here you go, Wolfgang. It claims it is the only app with voice navigation, but I'm sure with time there will be others. The statement is in the orange that I encompassed in red.

Thanks guys. This is all very informative. For my Asus Transformer I was actually looking at this MS program. I need it only for Europe, especially France where we do most of our travel.

But since the transformer does not have GPS or GNSS, I will get this device. BT works well on the Transformer. I already use a BT mouse. I prefer to get this in Europe because the standards and regulations are sometimes different.

What do you guys think. Will that work.

I guess that will work, in fact I know a long haul truck driver driving Scandinavian food products to Southern Europe and fruits / vegetables back in his refrigerated trailer who uses that kind of combo (laptop & BT GPS receiver) although the Windows software he's using (can't remember the name) is a "truck driver" version with all weight, hight and other limits for heavy vehicles for bridges and so on.
