    Facebook throws in towel on email


    The social networking giant has told AFP by email that it is giving up on email "because most people haven't been using their Facebook email address, and we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone".

    The company launched its email service in 2010, and in 2012, prompted an outcry by changing the default address for messages to users' Facebook addresses

    I think the main reason is what 'mattman' said... Facebook did ZERO promotion of that email service so very few people will use it as a consequence!

    I'd of thought you wouldn't use Facebook at all if you were particularly worried about privacy.
    Valid enough point, but the usefulness of facebook as a whole outweighs that.

    That said, I saw no reason to allow them to read my emails too. I also do not use ms or google email services either.
