Microsoft is about to take Windows XP off life support

On April 8, Windows XP's life is coming to an end. On that day, Microsoft will stop issuing security updates to the 12-year-old operating system, and it will end nearly all technical support as well.

Not really new news but I'll bet there are plenty of people out there that haven't heard this (or simply don't care).

yes it is old news but Microsoft has been campaigning to push those who have XP to upgrade. I hear from some of my sources that MS is working on an incentive program to get ppl to move to Windows 8

Good luck with that! The people I know who still run XP will stay with it regardless, for as long as their computers work.

That leaves me wondering just what i'm supposed to do with an old but still useable Samsung NC10 netbook. I've tried Ubuntu but it made it run hot and shortened the battery life. Windows 7 Starter only came pre-installed on new hardware and Windows 8 would cost too much against the netbooks value and probably wouldn't run too well either (although i don't know this for sure but seems reasonable to assume).

I'd rather have Windows on it than Linux but what are my (and many other peoples) options?

Windows 7 is still a option for a lot of people who are not moving to Windows 8 due to the look. I think what bothers me on this is how some people are upset at Microsoft for this action, are they suppose to continue to spend money on development on a operating system that they have not made any real money off of in probably the last five years? It hasn't made much business sense to support it for as long as they have.

On a further note the performance and security updates to Windows 8.1 makes it worth the upgrade.

    not so fast

To quote a post by myself in XPForums.com ... XP is far from dead.

Sources say that XP commands 20%, to as much as 28% of the current market. This is as of December 2013.

I also read somewhere that China is pressuring MS to extend support of XP. Maybe the extra year of antimalware support is the result?

    -----------

I use Win7, 8, etc.. XP is nice just to surf the net with. It's uncomplicated.
