You need to have a machine up and running already (windows installed) to install from the setup. Many people are using the iso for VMs, or cold boot ( spare machines that we want to just blast all the information away and get a clean installation).

ok thanks.

i'm not very familiar with the technical details behind windows 8, is it recomendable to install windows 8 to replace my current windows7 (thinkpad t410, windows 7 64 bit)? or will there be some (severe) problems with using currently installed programs?

I was going to just do a VM but I wouldn't see how it would react with my 6 screens so I think I'll jump straight into a dual boot.

It's important to realize that this is a consumer preview, and not necessarily a daily driver. I'm not saying it's not stable, but if you are replacing a system you are using for actual use you might want to rethink installation, or steal somebody else's computer and do it to theirs in case you don't like it. Really running it virtualized will give you a nice little preview and you can install your applications and see if they are compatible etc.

The setup will install over top of/ Upgrade your current OS in which case you will have to reinstall your current OS when the WCP expires plus some of your current programs may not work and there is a risk of losing your current data should the upgrade fail.

The ISO can be installed on a separate partition/drive negating any of the above risk.

2 GB 0f 3,3 downloaded at appox 900 kb/sec wont be long now.

Time to locate brinks tutorial on making a USB installer
