Microsoft rechristens 'SkyDrive' as 'OneDrive'

Microsoft just announce the awaited replacement name for SkyDrive, its cloud storage service.

As first spotted by Rod Trent at Windows ITPro, the new name is "OneDrive." Microsoft is confirming the new name in a January 27 blog post.

OneDrive.com, a preview site, notes that "OneDrive is coming soon."

"Get ready for an even better place to store and share your favorite things across all your favorite devices," reads the text on the site. "OneDrive is everything you love about SkyDrive and More and it's coming soon."

Bit like Ubuntu One. Probably a wise choice. Spydrive might not have gone down so well.

Quite surprised the onedrive name hasn't already been grabbed.

Ehh, not too bad. Better than going from "metro" to Windows Store app.

I expect to see features because you can't just rebrand a service and call it new.

Just received my email for 20 GBs free for a year. I like free stuff, but I wonder how much it'll be in a year? We'll see how it goes.

Hey. No fair. I got nothing

Nice name choice though.

I don't know what I did to deserve it other than use it on my PC and recently on my Lumia 1520 that I bought via the MS online store. MS's systems and services has surely simplified my life! And even more now with 20 gigs more. :)

Probably because I already had 25 free from Hotmail and 200 free from my Surface Purchase. I didn't get the 25 for Christmas either.:(

Well I used to use sky dive when it was a standalone app and behaved like drop box...them Microsoft went and integrated it into windows 8.1 and it got all weird so I stopped using it. Shame really as I have 50GB that no longer gets used.

I'm a cloud user, and I work for a tech savvy company so cloud is integral to our future. Regular IT jobs with physical server, or local VM's are going the way of the dodo bird.

I very much preferred the way SkyDrive "was", as a standalone classic desktop app versus how it works in 8.1

They've given me 40 gigs free so far. I am not complaining.

Total so far, 67 gigs of OneDrive storage! So much room for activities!

I find cloud storage to be a necessary evil of sorts. It's the same concept to me as letting a bank hold YOUR money versus keeping it somewhere in your house. You can choose to put what you want in it, but if you house burns down, at least what's in the bank still is available. But banks can collapse...which is why I use credit unions.

[h=1]OneDrive Name Already in Use, More Legal Trouble Coming for Microsoft[/h]
Microsoft has recently announced that it’s renaming SkyDrive to OneDrive in order to avoid a legal dispute with British satellite broadcaster BSkyB over the name, but it turns out that more trouble could emerge soon for the Redmond-based tech giant.

TechGeek is reporting that OneDrive is a designation that several businesses across the world are already using right now, including a motorparts manufacturer that has strong ties with KFC in Malaysia and Australian company Zipbolt, which makes bolts using this name.

More of One drive in use.
