What problem does Windows 8 solve?

It is definitely going to save people money in the short term.

There are some things that might be called improvements - there are lots of things that are just the opposite.

A lot of folk will not be rushing to buy retail upgrades to Win 89.

That will save then quite a few bucks.

In the long term - it is going to cost everyone dear.

It is part of a growing effort to force everyone into the clouds for everything.

When that has been established gradually and by stealth - you can guarantee it will not be free.

(There will probably be a very limited free service - to avoid being accused of cutting off dear old Granny in Australia )

I get that Win8 is very cloud enabled, but you really don't have to use any of those features -- you can use everything locally on your machine (and it will still run faster/lighter than win7). Can anyone explain in small words and complete sentences why having cloud operation built in = d$$ms day when using the cloud is optional and not even necessarily useful for a lot of users?

There is a big difference between learning things that are interesting and having to relearn how to use a tool before you can be productive with that tool.

Imagine yourself as a mechanic and you've been turning wrenches for 10 years. Now someone comes to you and tells you that all of your wrenches are outdated and you have to get a new set of tools, that aren't just sized differently but work in a completely different manner than your existing wrenches. Not only do you have to learn to use the new tools but you are expected to be even more productive than you were before because the new tools are better.

Simple. It has been discussed frequently here. It is showing the projection of the future and where they are going with all this. Windows 8 is the introduction. Windows 9 will be the flock to it. Windows 10 will be the lock and key. Or something like that.

Ever notice how rights seem to be taken away gradually, no matter where or how it applies?

Not entirely. The PADDs are touch screen and much of the programming is still use the touch screen. The voice systems is mostly for inquiries.

Why would I even want to have a cloud?

I used an OS called QNX back in the late 80s which is/was a UNIX clone. I had a 286 with three terminals hanging off of it and I ran a DOS session as well for code editing.

If the LINUX world would make LINUX less geeky then it would stand a better chance.

I guess that actually happened to a lot of mechanics in the US when manufacturers were changing to metric.

That reminds me a little joke:

A country (let's keep it unnamed) decided to change from driving on the left side of the road to driving on the right side of the road. For that they made a 'staged plan'.

On Jan.1, all busses would start driving on the other side, on Jan.2 the trucks followed suit, on Jan.3, the passenger cars started driving on the right and on Jan.4 all the rest (Cycles, etc.). Talking of a plan that is not that perfect - LOL.

I have certainly read a lot of what you describe, but I guess what I'm asking for is more analysis per conclusion. Cloud = moneysink is a frequently discussed theme, as you say, but I haven't really read an explanation for why this is the end of the world when using it is optional.

Interesting point. I agree; rights are frequently taken away gradually, and occasionally (at least in American history) restored in one fell swoop. Call me an optimist.
