HP brings back Windows 7 'by popular demand'...,

HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HP’s website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsoft’s touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

HP brings back Windows 7 'by popular demand' | The Verge

Queue the barely concealed insults from the tifkam fanbase.

As a working PC Tech, I can certainly relate to that, with a resounding "Hurah!" and maybe even a "Yikes!".

I can certainly relate to anyone who doesn't like the look or feel of Windows 8.
I've had to set up several PC's now, with Windows 8 on them and without the "Classic Shell", the new owners
would be completely lost.

Having Windows 8 on my own laptop for several months, I've wiped the drive and reloaded Windows 7.
Incompatibilities in Windows 8 were most of the problem. Windows 7 seems to just run everything.

I wonder how many other PC makers will follow HP's lead. ???

Nice post!

There's still "popular" demand for HP? Poor cooling designs, MacBook clones, printers that collapse and die from just being looked at, and the overall lack of genuine innovation? Ok...

Instead, they should take a page out of Lenovo's book. You don't see them pulling this sort of thing.

Anyways, I was reading around and the reason why HP's doing this is to basically give Microsoft the middle finger because Microsoft isn't being too keen on them as of late with their chromebook launch.

Out of the few dozen installs I've done with Windows 8/8.1 and being able to convince people, WITH LOGIC, why and how Windows 8.1 is better than 7 (of course customizing parts of the UI so it isn't too scary); I don't get it.

This is a terrible idea and seems to be a last ditch effort to gain some mediocre business.

Even putting Android on their devices isn't going to help them. They've harmed themselves in producing crappy hardware over the years and nothing will reverse that.

Windows 7 is good, but I would never go back to it. 8.1 just works beautifully on my desktop and Surface 2. Looking forward to some awesome news in April at Build when MS gives us more info on how they can make it better for those looking towards that "One" experience.

I think (unsure) that Lenovo has been doing something like this since 8's release, and have been dominating the market because of it. If not them, then it's for sure is someone else. I read about it a few months ago. Maybe Toshiba instead.

Just now looking at laptops on Toshiba's site, lots of them have this as standard:

"Windows 7 Professional (Windows 8.1 Pro license and recovery media included)"

The quick and simple of it is if you have a touch screen, you may want 8.1. If not, you can use whatever version, even 8.1 and before it.

I guess it really is hard to figure out according to those that can't figure it out.

Bingo! Here is one article of what I read. There was some else that talked about how a company is reaping it in because of pushing 7 over 8, but that might not even be Toshiba either - something entirely different lol:

Lenovo have been doing it too. HP are a bit late, they would have been better getting them in stores in serious numbers before Xmas buying season. That certainly wouldn't have turned it all around and prevented some moving to tablets, but may have helped to stem the losses.

"back by popular demand" is quite amusing, though.

ThinkCentre M83 Small Form Factor Desktop | Power & Stability | Lenovo | | Lenovo (CA)

Because it's HP and I've had enough experience with them to know that they're not decently built machines and are more frustration and headache than what they're worth.

The ThinkCentre by Lenovo is primarily designed for the enterprise, it even says so on that page. Other OEMs already sell business oriented machines with Windows 7 because obviously Windows 7 is being used and will be used for many years in that space, this isn't anything new or extraordinary. A business oriented lineup of PCs are different from consumer oriented PCs.

Dell, HP, Lenovo and probably other OEMs all offer Windows 7, but those again, are enterprise geared PCs.

By the way, if you go to Lenovo's main page, they're flaunting off the Carbon ultrabook, the Yoga 2, and the android Yoga tablet. There is no parading Windows 7 because of "popular demand." They're the only OEM that has seen increase in sales DUE TO IN PART by Windows 8, not just 7.

Am using (and have helped installing) many hp's, they have been\are excellent (seemingly these guys thinks that as well > http://blog.kirkpetersen.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Situation-Room.jpg )

Even though w8 can be tweaked and twisted to satisfy most w7 users, and it's stable and fast, let customers have a choice and give them what they want\need from the start. Good move to offer w7.

Really HP? Come on.

But more than anything it's just a lame move, and one that's disappointing to see from a company that has every reason roll up its sleeves and dive head-first into whatever the future might hold. HP has yet to produce a great phone or tablet, took webOS and drove it straight into the ground, and has a software strategy that seems to involve trying to make bloatware cool through sheer force of will. Likewise, running screaming back to Windows 7 to hold on for dear life is something that's doomed to fail sooner or later. We reached out to HP to see if maybe there's a more optimistic take, but so far no response.

Dear HP: Running From the Future Doesn't Help Anyone

Nothing wrong with that. That's what we got with 8.1. Apparently, some couldn't see this was 7 with touch features built in.

The problem is instead of just offering an option to go backwards from the get go, they're presenting an option that should've been present already. Instead of driving innovation, they've made it clear that they want to stifle it by announcing this embarrassing decision to help them back to relevancy. Windows 7 should've been a choice to begin with. They messed this up themselves. This doesn't help the evolution of the OS. This helps them try to make a buck off of those stuck in the late 2000's. Which they'll still fail at. They should be focusing on trying to make some appealing hardware. Not take us back 5 yrs. down memory lane.

I agree hp sucks in my opinion, every hp computer/ laptop i have worked on in the past 10 yrs had a problem, mostly hardware, hd failure, cd burners break, mother board failure, and add for laptops keys pop out of keyboards, touch mouse gets stuck, monitor dies, I will not sell or advise a hp printer, either the printer jams up after a month or the softwares screws up the 0S.

I can see why they would want to go back to windows 7, they cannot get anything to work right with windows 8.

10 yrs ago hp was pretty good in printers only, only they decided to go pc more and messed up printers and the pc
