You can put any wallpaper you want on the Desktop just like previous Windows operating systems. In 8.1 you can have Metro display your desktop wallpaper as a background instead of the included background images. My current theme has panoramic wallpapers that span across my three monitors. When I launch Metro the tiles appear on top of the desktop wallpaper on the monitor I launched it on.

I think that's ultimately the pinnacle of what a new UI needs: features, power, and customization options. Every time I read someone going on and on about how the Desktop is great and all always seems to condense down to those three reasons. If the Modern UI had all that, we'd be talking about how weird the weather is.

I vote for a WHOLE new UI, ditch the Desktop UI, build the Modern UI with all the goodies that we like from the Desktop.

Then what about us who don't use Modern UI at all?

I wish you people would stop complaining always about just the start screen. There is more to Windows 8 than that. Have you even bothered to see under the hood of Windows 8?

I don't know about you, but I don't have ANY problems with the start screen with mouse and keyboard. I find everything easily, faster than I ever could on Windows 7.

Oh and not only that, but Win8 outperforms Win7 on my machine. There's an enhanced scheduler that improves performance quite massively. I can multitask a lot better and my games run better on Win8 than they ever did on Win7.

I suggest you install and use the Zune software. That is the most EPIC definition of a metro designed Desktop program. It gorgeously designed, with awesome features.

The Modern UI isn't and should be strictly limited to touch, nor tablets, nor as just simple internet based apps.

"Windows 8 is good as an OS but horrible to use!"

Yeah...unfortunately learning to take advantage of the features and defaults in 8.1 has fallen on deaf ears.

    Exactly. I agree.

But what I do want to see in Win9, is a return to the desktop.
All OS's need a desktop to be fully functional.
Sorry, but, I don't care who tries to claim it, they aren't getting all of their work done on an iPad or Android or ChromeOS.

Full on Multi-Tasking requires a Desktop environment.
This is not possible with Full Screen Apps, or split screen. Sorry, but it isn't.

Had they taken the desktop away completely from Win8, I would be on-board with everyone else about the negatives.
I would be complaining right along with you.

But they didn't, they didn't cripple it either, it's a nice big improvement over Win7 even. And massive improvement over WinXP.

I enjoy much of the integration with sharing across platforms using things like Skydrive. Huge improvement in that.
Extremely Quick access to my email using the Mail App, and Contacts App synching between all of my systems and phone?
    That is Huge.
However, the Mail App and Contacts App do need some more improvements.
Such as Collapsible Folders. There are some others that I can not think of at the moment.
But, the Mail App and Contacts App work very well as is.
Can you do that on other systems? I am sure you can to some degree, but we aren't talking about other systems, we are talking about Windows, and these things are nice improvements and additions over what has been available in the past.

I do hope they make the needed changes to Win9.
Let me have Windowed Apps on my desktop if I want, or run them as full screen and be able to swipe them in and away as needed.
Give Native Multi-Desktop support like CubeDesktop, and give multi gesture support for touch.
And if not,, let CubeDesktop run smooth and integrate with Windows.
Mac has something similar, and to be honest, it's pretty sweet. Should be in Windows.

As for Customizations, Windows has never really approved of or given much ability to customize much in Windows, ever.
So, we have ALlllways needed to look at 3rd party apps. This is nothing new.
And that is where these come in....

    Talisman Desktop
    WindowBlinds
    Rainmeter

There is a lot of things you can use, this list is an extremely small portion of what is out there and possible.

Win8 is a solid OS, extremely functional as it is, yes it needs improvements, but it's getting a bad wrap for no real reason at all. The reasons are petty, ill-informed, overtly egregious, spiteful for the sake of being spiteful.

Many articles that are written, are so blatantly anti-Windows it's not even funny.
The consumer is being railroaded by the ones who think they know what they are talking about, cause someone told them what they thought, but most likely spent less than 5 min using it, and really they are just paid shills for what are called Article Advertisements.

But, a lot of the blame lay with Microsoft, for horrible Advertising.
I need to get into Advertising, cause obviously it doesn't take a lot of intelligence.

Anyway, Win9 will be fun to watch for. As will the next WP8 update.

Most of the Windows 8 articles that I have seen only focus on the start screen. A lot of them don't even mention the under-the-hood improvements, such as a newer kernel, out of the box integrated antivirus and the massively improved scheduler I mentioned previously.

It's just "To hell with the huge performance and security improvements over any other previous version of Windows and instead START SCREEN THIS START SCREEN THAT WINDOWS 8 SUCKS". Useless baiting trash.

Oh how good our Windows 8/8.1 is, when looking at your comment. Better multitasking, more stabil than windows 7, games runs better aso.
I have been running windows 8.1 since it was possible to upgrade win8 via the store, and I am NOT impressed.
Yes, I can boot straight to desktop (and I do that), but desktop is _still_ very ugly (not talking about wallpaper here, #11), multitasking is on par with win7.
Stability? I have had 1, ONE, BSOD in Windows 7 since it came out in 2009. In Windows 8.1 I have until now had 6. Mostly driver-related, so for some reason it is more difficult to write a stabil driver for windows 8.1 than for windows 7??
Games? Dx 11 games is the same in win8.1 as in win7, games on dx9.0c is somewhat worse performance in windows 8.1 than in windos 7, see these threads:
    https://www.eightforums.com/gaming/38...ows-8-1-a.html

A Microsoft game that not work without special tricks:
Flight Simulator X in Windows 8

On my Aspire One I enjoy Windows 8.1 very much, since the battery-time is better with win8.1 than with win7, but on my gamer-rig, I might soon be reinstalling Windows 7 x64. No driver errors, better performance in dx9.0c games (which is still made), and a much nicer desktop, windows with 3D buttons, rounded corners, glasslook not only in taskbar, but allmost anywhere.

As earlier stated, I really hope Windows 9 will be an OS of choises, so I can get what I want, and you can get what you want

I have been pleasantly surprised with Windows 8.1 . I installed it on a new system build I did just 4 weeks ago, had been running 7 prior to that on my previous build.
Take some getting used to , but runs very well for me - and love having EUFI with an SSD.

Perhaps Windows 9 is what originally was going to be 8.2, they now are making some more changes and selling it as a new OS...
