Chinese vendors plan tablets with both Android and Windows

Consumers looking for a cheap tablet later this year will find some devices loaded with both Android and Windows 8, a new trend among Chinese manufacturers.

Scores of tablets from Chinese vendors were on display at the International CES show in Las Vegas this week, running only Android or Windows. But several Chinese manufacturers are also advertising upcoming tablets that will load either one of the OSes on reboot, or switch between them during the device’s operation.

Four of the companies, all based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, said at the show they’ll start releasing the devices this quarter, with prices at around $250.

So is Android eating into the Windows world now? This is good for the consumer, but not for Microsoft. Basically some manufacturers are gonna give users a dual boot choice, while Intel and AMD are going into the idea of virtualization (running Android alongside Windows).

Google isn't saying anything on this, but I think there is no need to. Its a smart move. By having Android on a PC, the Android market will flourish even more and obviously developers will focus more on developing for Android because if you can create one application for an Android smartphone, then it will run fine on Windows PCs. Again the idea here is virtualization so there is no need to "rewrite" apps.

Where does Windows fit in this place? Well the consumer will be able to run legacy Windows applications, but the Metro experience will become irrelevant. In other words, if there are better applications on the Android platform, why bother using Metro apps? Why bother developing apps just for Windows 8?

It's an interesting move since Google will now be eating Windows from the inside instead from the outside. Oh well but I'm curious about running Android apps alongside Windows. It would have been nice if I can respond to my text messages within a virtualized Android environment instead of going to my phone and doing that but I don't think this is possible.

Would also be nice if Apple considered virtualizing iOS on OS X to run iOS applications on the desktop. That would be a big win for me.

You can run Android on your PC right now. I've played around with this and it seems to work fine, touchscreen, sound, etc.

If they are like other devices I've seen, when docked you get Windows when undocked you get Android. It's basically an Android tablet that doubles as a display when docked into the Windows PC base. When docked it looks like a laptop. I couldn't tell if the posted article is referring to these type of devices but it wouldn't surprise me that some of them worked like that. It's not something I'd want to buy.

I poked around there, looks interesting. This isn't stand alone though is it? It appears it runs from Windows?

Bluestacks runs in windows, correct. I played with it for several days on two windows 8 units and finally got it kind of working on one. It is a great idea but on my units it is not worth messing with. I hope they or someone will get something running well as I like the idea.

OK, that's what I thought. There didn't seem to be much info on that site, or maybe I just didn't look in the right places. Thanks' for the reply.
