    SD cards hacked

SD cards, including tiny microSD and SIM cards, contain a powerful and hackable computer system. Are you sure you want to use your cell phone as a credit card?

Putting malicious code on USB thumb drives and dropping them near employee entrances is an old hack. A curious employee plugs the USB drive into their PC and voila, another hacked computer.

At the Chaos Computer Congress (30C3), in Hamburg, Germany, a new and deeper hack of flash storage was demonstrated. Researchers hacked the microcontroller inside all SD and microSD flash cards that enables a man in the middle attack

Would you remember how? I got rid of my last typewriter, the IBM Selectric, almost ten years ago now.
I'm one of the last, of the factory trained IBM Selectric technicians.

My favorite joke with the checkers at Walmart, etc., "Let me introduce you to something new..... it's called CASH!"
Then they chuckle, I chuckle and I wonder just how long it will be, before our CASH disappears altogether.
Big Brother would love that. Then they can track every transaction that we make, even at a pay toilet. Yikes!

So what's the bottom line on the SD card situation? Brink?

I know there's a lever to be pulled for return, clacky keys, and lots and lots of white out.

If that cryptocurrency thing becomes big, that's it for cash, at least in the meantime.

If SD cards and thumb drives are hackable, then would not SSDs also have a similar problem? They seem like the same technology under the covers. Gives you pause when you think of the origins of the hardware we use. Not to point any fingers (*cough* - china - *cough*).

There are people that actually modify old typewriters so they can be used as a PC keyboard. I've seen some pretty cool looking Steampunk setups. https://www.google.ca/search?q=steam...w=1280&bih=899

Its a problem that's for sure. Anything with firmware is a potential target. D-Link is getting some heat over a backdoor added to some of its network gear (Routers) by third party company that did work for them.
