Microsoft applies for trademark on 'Mod'

Back on December 9, Microsoft applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark on "Mod."

Might this be Microsoft's long-awaited replacement for "Metro"? In August 2012, just before launching Windows 8, Microsoft officials conceded that the company would no longer be using "Metro" to describe the tiled interface and design language at the heart of its Windows Phone and Windows operating systems. Though Microsoft officials never admitted publicly the reason for the pull-back, a naming dispute with the German partner Metro Group is believed to be the reason behind Microsoft's Metro naming crisis

Interesting but if it's only change in name or some behavior of apps, it will not help any until they generate more interest for some major, serious, SW developers to make some real good apps that would work on all Win platforms.

    Hi there.

Ms is probably too late to get that trademark.

Some older people on this site might remember "Mods and Rockers" back in the mid 1960's that plagued Eastern and Southern English seaside cities.

Ridiculous, but things like this seems to be the norm & expected from MS these days.

It was because another company had a copyright on "Metro" for why Microsoft had to stop using it even though unrelated, and started this whole mess. Microsoft is just trying to get a copyright of their own to prevent this type of garbage from happening again.

But you must admit that "Mod" would be pretty difficult to make a claim to. Mod, Modding, Modded has been in common use for long time,we Modded ie. modified stuff forever and it certainly can not describe a stock factory product.

Oh I agree with that, but I also think "Metro" should have never been order to can't be used because of the unrelated (IMO) copyright either.

I'm sure we're missing the whole legal argument though.

Could it be just a shortened word "Modern" or an acronym ?
