a naming dispute with the German partner Metro Group is believed to be the reason behind Microsoft's Metro naming crisis.
This is very likely. The Metro group is a very big company that employs 300.000 people and was probably not afraid to go into litigation with MS.

They were also the main competitor to Walmart in Germany. Walmart threw the towel after trying to compete with them for 7 years - rumor has it that Walmart lost $350 Million each year in Germany.

It's possible, but I think that was just a convenient excuse.

Metro was (and still is) being slammed all over the Internet and true to form (for a big corporation) instead of fixing the problems, they just renamed it.

Yes, prior use of the word "mod" as an generally established acronym for "modification" would be very easy to show. I'm not sure that the capital "M" would really be enough to distinguish it as a trademark. I think it is fairly easy to get a trademark, but keeping it is another matter.

Would the owners to the rights of the tv show The Mod Squad have any rights to the name Mod?

I'm not sure about the creators/owners of the show, but I wouldn't be surprised if the MPAA claimed that it should be paid lots of money for the Rights.

I agree. The thread came up at the time. It was a most unlikely rumour. Living in that part of Europe, I am well acquainted with the Metro chain of wholesale stores, and I don't honestly think anyone could have confused the 2.
A copyright sueing action would have been oit of the question as the name has been in use for a much longer time than the super chain If anyone had rights, perhaps it would have been the Paris underground railway system

In Germany Metro owns a couple of brick and mortar electronics chains (similar to e.g. BestBuy). Maybe that was the connection.
