    Hi there

Source of this info please !!!

Still existing TechNet subscriptions will of course have access but what about the rest.

As far as WMC is concerned - that's LAST century's technology -- there are so many BETTER and alternative ways of handling Media playing etc that WMC is essentially a totally redundant piece of software. Things like Film service streaming or online TV weren't around when WMC was first launched - and these days who ever bothers to install TV cards etc in their computers.

    Cheers

WMC - Unfortunately the infrastructure is not in place in many places to be able to take advantage of Film Services or On-line TV. I live in the UP of Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior. I live in a log-cabin in the middle of the woods and the only option I have is Satellite for TV or Internet. The problem with Satellite Internet service is a policy known as FAP (Fair Access Policy). This policy establishes an equitable balance in Internet access for all. The service provider assigns a download threshold that limits the amount of data that may be continuously downloaded within specified time periods. Subscribers who exceed this limit will experience a temporary reduction of speed. When I was with Hughesnet that limit was 256mb within a 24 hour period. Exceed that limit and your speed reduces to less than dial-up for the next 24 hours. With my current provider it's 15gb per month which is better, but if you exceed that your speed is reduced for the remainder of the month. So for me having a TV card in my PC attached to my DishTV Satellite settop box is the best answer.

I've had no problems adding Media Center after a clean install of 8 or 8.1.

As far as WMC is concerned, I agree with you. I think most people were simply so used to using the Windows-supplied codecs and other media software that they had a knee-jerk reaction to Microsoft culling WMC--I was one of them... I got WMC free and had no trouble installing it with my original keys with my full UEFI install of 8.1, but with programs like VLC I don't even need it.

A decade or two back, a situation like yours wouldn't have bothered me at all. But these days? I really make a concerted effort not to live in locales where decent Internet broadband access isn't available, if I can possibly help it. I also insist on wired connections as wireless is too limited and sporadic to be of much value, especially when I want to download files/programs that are gigabytes in size somewhat rapidly... FAP sounds more like "SAP", to me. The satellites reserve most of their bandwidth for services that pay them much better than Hughesnet, leaving you as a Hughesnet customer severely bandwidth starved in the end even while paying premium prices for connectivity. Isolation definitely has its advantages--but your story highlights a few of the disadvantages, too.
