I live in a log-cabin in the middle of the woods and the only option I have is Satellite for TV or Internet. The problem with Satellite Internet service is a policy known as FAP (Fair Access Policy). This policy establishes an equitable balance in Internet access for all. The service provider assigns a download threshold that limits the amount of data that may be continuously downloaded within specified time periods. Subscribers who exceed this limit will experience a temporary reduction of speed. When I was with Hughesnet that limit was 256mb within a 24 hour period. Exceed that limit and your speed reduces to less than dial-up for the next 24 hours. With my current provider it's 15gb per month which is better, but if you exceed that your speed is reduced for the remainder of the month. So for me having a TV card in my PC attached to my DishTV Satellite settop box is the best answer.
    Hi there

These days 15 GB a month IMO hardly qualifies for ANY SORT of usage a month never mind "Fair usage" policy. Really with around 12.5% of the 21st century ALREADY passed what sort of pre-historic limit is that -- a half way decent movie or a 2 hour streamed TV program at 1080p HD will probably need around 3 GB - and we've got higher resolutions on the way (4K for starters).

I think these people with ridiculously low bandwidth amounts need to get some sort of concerted action going -- I mean just yesterday I downloaded probably about 50 GB in ONE day (The TV Xmas / new year schedules are so HIDEOUS where I am - I've made sure we have enough decent alternative entertainment if required for this period !!!) - of course where I am we don't have caps or anything like that - and in rural areas Satellite might be the only method - but it doesn't have to be slow or cap limited -- I'm sure the NSA / CIA / Army etc. don't have any problems with Satellite time so the problem most definitely is not TECHNICAL.

    Cheers

My total traffic for this month is 225 GB already, mostly from watching IPTV in HD and that is on 8/1 Mbps. I have two more computers on same line so I guess total traffic is at least double that. I would never settle for internet with a cap even if it was much faster or cheaper, it would be just to constricting.

Yes and be able to install WMC after the clean install which you can't now.
    Hi there

Source of this info please !!!

Still existing TechNet subscriptions will of course have access but what about the rest.

As far as WMC is concerned - that's LAST century's technology -- there are so many BETTER and alternative ways of handling Media playing etc that WMC is essentially a totally redundant piece of software. Things like Film service streaming or online TV weren't around when WMC was first launched - and these days who ever bothers to install TV cards etc in their computers.

    Cheers

Sorry but I'll still take WMC over anything else period. No question here at all for me bro, nothing else works nearly as well IMO. Don't care about streaming because you can stream from any old TV with streaming built in, don't care about TV tuner card because I have cable, what I do care about is WMC with media browser.

WMC+ Media browser + Windows remote control = The best movie collection browser of all time, nothing will ever replace it or make it better.

After 8 it's no problem of course but how can you add WMC after a true clean install of 8.1, clean install not a clean upgrade install which is different. No going through the store at all, not burning the DVD during the install from the store.

Contrary to popular belief it is possible to perform a completely clean install of 8.1 from the "right" DVD, not the DVD you can make during the store install. But no way to add WMC after a true clean "non store" install and I've read around on this, there are many others with the same complaint.

If you are going to make a statement then why not show how it can be done?

Pretty simple actually, clean install 8.1 Pro with my TechNet ISO, then go to Add Features and type in my MC key. Once the update is finished I just click activate windows if its not already activated. I've done it on my desktop and laptop.

Yes I had no option to add Media Center in Add Features after the clean install. I've seen the same complaint all over the place so maybe it's an upgrade key problem. With the 9600 DVD this is what I got.

Not that it really matters because I just re-installed Win 8, activated, added Media Center then used the 8.1 store link to clean install 8.1 and imaged the install etc.

I was using an upgrade key so that might have been the problem not sure but for 40 bucks I'm not complaining.

TechNet keys are full retail, maybe it was due to your upgrade key? I've never had any problems with my MC keys, even the one I had never used, and was supposed to expire worked when I tried it. I had to do one phone activation when I moved a key from one PC to another but that went without a flaw all automated without having to speak to real person. I snagged 4 free ones when they were up for grabs.

Nah, it isn't the Win 8.0 upgrade key... I paid the same $40 back in January and had no trouble installing WMC through "Add Features." Of course, I do have a Technet/MSDN iso for 8.1, and I last did a clean, full 8.1 install about 6 weeks ago as I wanted a UEFI install. Used my upgrade key to activate the installation and had no trouble adding WMC, afterwards.

One thing: make sure you have your original, separate WMC key or you won't be able to add it even if it does show up under Add Features. I got that key back in January when I got my Win8.0 upgrade key, IFAIR.

Still, for DVD movie playback I prefer VLC (much better), and of course when streaming in Win8.1, etc. Microsoft's Silverlight does a great job. (I think some folks get Media Player and Media Center confused occasionally.)

    Merry Christmas!
