Maybe it will happen, but I wouldn't bet too much money on it.

I will love to have the startmenu back, and I would also love to have aero and more adjustments possibilities to Windows looks and feel. Floating Apps, well okay, for you that uses apps, this could be a great choise. I still have not found any app at all that I want to use over a normal Windows program. Not one app! (on my PC that is. On my phone it is a different story)

Of all the nerve! Just last week I came up with a recipe for a homemade start menu (How to Make a Cascading All-Apps Toolbar) and now MS is going to steal all my business away from me by bringing back THEIR start menu??? I'll sue them for copyright violation!

Of course, I wasn't going to make any money on my "recipe" anyway. But it's not the money -- it's their sneaky, underhanded tactics that I can't stand. What a slimy, contemptible, lowdown trick!

But, I willl also add a big yes vote for floating Metro apps.

Wait.. what? Where will the start screen go? I just recently decided that I am happy and comfortable with it and now they are going to take it away.

I think I better get a petition ready to bring back the start screen for when this happens!

Seriously though, I am glad they have finally seen sense. I currently use modern mix and it's a great little program... I've actually started using metro apps because of it.

It is a curious news item. The link quotes Paul Thurrot. Going to Paul Thurrots blogs, I find he quotes Mary J as his source. Going to Mary J, after extensive googling, I cannot find any reference to the return of the Start Menu. Only hint I did find was the possibility of changes in 2015? Where goes Windows 8.2?

I am at ease, and at home, using a customised modern screen as my start menu, and, I must confess, I find it easier than clicking through the depths of the legacy menu. But that, I guess, is personal taste.

But I do feel, to be fair to MS, that the propaganda goes on and on. Even in this thread, I read a post that states "millions of users hate the new start menu". Cam anyone point me to an authorative source for such a quote? I am not fully doubting it, but would like to see it substantiated. I do read on the IT pages, articles concerning a dislike, but these are from echoing pundits and, of course, it is natural to any web user, that these articles should be prominent.

too good to be true.. really MS listening to it's costumers? am I dreaming?
I still remember in windows 8 preview version there was registry change to bring start menu but they deliberately removed it..

of course I agree start menu should be option besides start screen.. for example after install during first start up you can choose you want to boot to desktop or start screen, then you can choose start button or no start button and if you want start button, you can choose if start button brings start screen or start menu. It can be changed later at any time.
Metro apps running in windows is great thing although metro apps still lacks compared to traditional software in overall functionality.
but many settings and default Microsoft software is moved to metro so if that can run in windows it would be great. it may even make me interested in using some of metro apps.

Both menu and metro should be offered, not forced to use one for sure.
