MS did one right thing and that is getting rid of the Start Menu but people just cant let it go, they want more of the same ol'
Common sense to Metro???? Sorry but if you are using a tablet or phone then perhaps you are right but on a PC; Metro is to say the least a pain in the butt. If MS actually brings back the start button and gives us a choice of classic menus then I will support them all the way. I want to have a choice. I don't want a smartphone OS being shoved down my throat. Is that too much to ask for?

Old windows: 1. start, 2. all programs, 3. click the program if youre luck, 4. possible click to the folder which contained the exe.
New windows: 1. swipe touchpad right to left or click start, 2. click program if all apps is ticked.
Of course windows 8.1 or pre 8 all can be customized to suit you, but why add more bloating when you could just get over it like an ex.
Have you ever heard of desktop short cuts? Or Task bar? Really now!

    My point exactly.
    The old menu is obsolete.

    Task Bar

I use my "Task Bar" for the "real work" & charms for general "Browsing".

I went back to Win7 on one of my computers, by using another drive that I physically reformatted to get rid of the "Reserved" partition, installed Win7. Spent a few days with it, then put the Win8.1 drive back in!

I guess you can say I was convinced! Good thing I have a number of HDs around!

I have 4 desktops in different states of use, a SONY VAIO lap top & a SURFACE tablet that I always take to the
loo when I do my morning business!

I am retired & have my computers to keep me involved. Just received a MS LifeCam Studio.
This will keep my busy for awhile.

I have the programs I use every day on my taskbar, IE, Outlook, Media Player, and the one or two games I may be playing. Quick easy access. Other frequently used programs and Apps are on my main Start Screen. Everything else is on the All Apps screen. I find the All Apps screen a bit to cluttered to use it as my Main Start Screen. Being able to span the Start Screen across multiple monitors might be interesting. All of my PC's are now running 8 or 8.1.

Absolutely right. The dual UIs are really not needed on the desktop. I guess if you have multiple devices (desktop, smartphone, tablet), then it has a certain learning effect. But for those like me who use Android on mobile and Windows on the desktop, the Metro makes no sense.

You know what doesn't make sense to me? An Intel i5 processor on a tablet PC even though you don't have a UI to multitask efficiently.

Welcome back Cokey! Glad to see you exuberance hasn't waned!

I paid $3 (Aussie) for StartIsBack, which includes StartIsBackPlus for 8.1, and have Metro start screen totally switched off so I never see it. So I don't care whether they bring it back or not ... I want my $3 worth! LOL!

But for the average Joe who wants something that works straight out of the box, 8.1 doesn't cut it ... especially since IE11 doesn't work until the DNS address is manually changed; without even mentioning the Start Menu.

As has been repeated ad nauseum, Smart fone GUI for mobile devices; Classic Start Menu for desktops.

I'll put it this way, in 2012 November I got my wife a hp Envy 20" All in one touch screen Win 8 pro. After a couple of days both of us learning how to work with Win 8 she insisted on me installing a Start button (ClassicShell) I did on her touch screen leave set to boot normally to lock screen/Metro. After more that a year now she automatically goes straight to the desktop. she is a very low tech user, user Facebook, email etc. So she still deals with the metro apps. Its been a battle over email she really liked the old MS Outlook Express format was learning how to use the Live desktop program, hates Outlook and Web Mail.

So I have to agree that Metro interface and Apps or not useful on a WS or NB, and actually hinder productivity.
Were both using Android smart phones and have no plans to change that at all.

My NB win 7 HP, stayed that way until 8.1 was released. I have clean installed to 8.1 pro to my Admin User account, using Classic Shell, and gpedits to boot directly to log in\desktop Disabled all hot corners. Changed all programs to open in my default desktop Programs. Looks and feels just like my win 7 only on 8.1 steroids. Still working on getting rid of all the Metro stuff completely. I still have the Gadgets that I like to use. Might consider Desktop apps when one comes along that I want to use. actual hoping that the gadgets I use actually get re written as Desktop apps
