2013 in Review: Tech Turkeys of the year

    Tech Turkeys of 2013

Thanksgiving of 2013 is upon us, and you know what that means... holiday gift lists and end of year news re-cap articles!

But before we get there, we think it would be best to talk about Turkeys. Not Thanksgiving Turkeys, the juicy, delicious kind with savory gravy that everyone loves. We're talking about TECH TURKEYS, the worst products and services that have graced the pages of ZDNet over the past year.

This year, our Turkeys come in two flavors: Those that truly displayed their Gobble-Gobble from a purely technical perspective (Type 1) and those that failed to realize revenue or garner significant industry adoption (Type 2).

So without further ado, from the Editors and Contributors of ZDNet, the TECH TURKEYS of 2013.

    Hi there.

I must be missing something here.

I get the intro which talks about Tech Turkeys BUT WHERE IS THE ARTICLE -- I can't be bothered twittering / following or whatever --the Intro has a nice pre-amble about the Top Tech turkeys -- so I'm looking for a READ MORE link to the articles but I CAN'T SEE ONE. Just some discussion groups you have to login / register to view.

    Cheers

you have two options, at the very top, where it says "image 1 of 21", on the right it says "next", you can click on that.
You can also scroll down just bellow that real turkey picture and you'll see a bar with lots of small thumbnails, click at one at the time.

    Very nice article, worth reading.

    Hi there.

Seems I don't get that -- I logged again via another proxy -- now it's OK -- so the article might be "geographically restricted".

    Thanks - good read.

The Guardian Newspaper in the UK even has its own description for people who read it or subscribe to it --I believe in the UK these are known as "Guardianista's" and the paper is the one that has all the "Public service jobs" in it with all those job titles that are totally meaningless -- For instance in a CITY environment like KINGSTON UPON HULL (I remember the name as this was the UK Port that had issues with Icelandic Fishing vessels during the so called "Cod Wars") they have an "Urban Forrestry Officer" !!!!! - I hope the tax payers of that city enjoy the 0.5 Sq metre of "Forrest" within the City's boundary. !!!!

Government I.T project disasters aren't restricted only to the USA --strangely enough a HUGE UK Health system was cancelled after spending nearly a BILLION GBP on it --mind you the UK health system employs roughly the same number of people as The Indian Railways or just fewer (slightly) than the entire Chinese (People's republic) Army - so whatever the politics of the system there is no way in the known universe of ever managing efficiently an organisation of that size so IT projects are doomed to failure even before ONE CENT is spent.

Happy "Turkey Day" to all US residents on the Forums. !!

    Cheers

I think the post of Urban Forestry Officer mainly involves supervising groups of young offenders on community service orders, planting trees on roadside verges and in other otherwise barren sites, to spend some of the EU grants the city has been awarded. Where they nick them from is not disclosed.

Since Hull is to be the "City of Culture" in 2017, it needs to present a greener image, so any surviving tree in the city has a preservation order slapped on it by the planners:

Nobody listens to the UFO (as he is affectionately called) in Hull anyway as the above piece shows.
