Microsoft Expected to Release Windows 8.1 ISOs This Month

Microsoft has launched the Windows 8.1 exclusively via the store, with several company officials explaining that no stand-alone ISOs would be released.

Now it turns out that someone in Redmond had a change of heart, as Microsoft might actually launch Windows 8.1 ISOs later this month.

One of our readers told us that Microsoft’s support staff confirmed such plans, which would basically provide users with a second option for updating, but also with an easier way to perform a clean in

especially useful for those with limited bandwidth options.

That's just it with this new method of upgrading. Those with limited data downloading will have to pay for extra data and those with no Internet connection are left out.

Hopefully MS will indeed release the ISOs. I think it to be a good move.

yup, same page ............. but its also good to have the physical disk just in case, the computer fails to boot to windows or there's no web access available.

I'm wondering now if the ISO MS will or may put out would be the same as the one most of us D/L using that trick thing? or would it be more "up to date"

Hopefully more up to date and closer to an actual retail DVD. What you get though the trick download is Core or Pro depending on what product code you enter during the download. That ISO will only install that one version. A retail DVD is both Core and Pro and can install either one depending on what product code you enter during the install. I'd rather have the full Retail DVD thank you very much.

If you already have an 8.1 product code your good to go. It will accept 8.1 keys just fine, and likely read embedded 8.1 keys during the install. However, if all you have is an 8.0 product code you may not be able to install using that code. You may have to install with a generic 8.1 code and then activate with your 8.0 code. I hope they change that, but that's the way it works at the moment.

I use Macrium Reflect to do system images and the program allows you to create either a linux based, or windows based bootable disk, so I never have to depend on Windows booting, in order to restore an image.

No, what I'm saying is if you already have Windows 8, with a little ingenuity you can use your Windows 8 code to go directly to Windows 8.1 using the 8.1 ISO. Windows 8.1 will activate with a Windows 8 code just fine, it just won't install with one. There are leaked install codes that will let you install but won't activate.

If you already have a Windows 8.1 product code but no media the 8.1 ISO is what you want.

I would hope that if Microsoft are officially releasing it to consumers (for instance those wanting to upgrade from Windows 8 but with limited bandwidth), it would accept a Windows 8 product key directly.

I guess that means MS will need to do some tweaking to the installer because that's different from previous ISOs that people have obtained.

I hope they change that too. The current TechNet Retail ISO's won't use the embedded 8 codes, and won't except a Windows 8.0 code during the install. Most people with a factory OEM install won't know what their 8 code is, as its not printed on the COA sticker. That makes doing a clean install on an OEM machine a pain to say the least.

You can use "Magic Jelly Bean" or similar to get the embedded code. I've got a retail OEM disk for Windows8 Pro which has the code shown on the package. Just hope the ISO comes with the code needed to load it.

When I first downloaded the 8.1 upgrade the internet wouldn't work. I talked to Microsoft and the techo gave me a case number and said he'd have to investigate it and get back to me within in the next 3 days. In the meantime I reinstalled a bare bones backup image of 8 and downloaded the upgrade in case it had been corrupted in the download. Same problem occurred.

IMHO a backup image is nice to have, but can't beat an ISO for a clean install.
