Windows 8.1 'GA Rollup A' update will finalize the Windows

Windows 8.1 is set to roll out to current Windows 8 users on October 17th, with general availability on October 18th. However, did you know that the operating system update isn't necessarily finished yet even though it has already hit RTM (Release To Manufacturing)?

Even though Windows 8.1 has reached RTM and is nearing its general availability, Microsoft will also be releasing a "GA Rollup A" update upon the release of the operating system. Call it an update for the update, if you will. This update will finalize the Windows 8.1 code, since technically Windows 8.1 isn't finished yet even though it hit RTM

No, RTM is "finished" just as much as any other release of Windows is "finished". Just because patches are issued after release doesn't change anything.

Finished means, it's the version that ships on disk (or disk image). A GA Rollup just means it's adding patches for things that have been found since RTM was finalized. That happened with Windows 7 and Vista as well.

I suppose there is something in that, there are always updates even if you get the iso hot off the press. This time they are quite big.

I think the article means this at the bottom of the IE kiddies version:

MS will want to know the updates are ok , given they have had a few dodgy ones recently

When the RTM was released (a few weeks ago?) MS said that this was going to happen.

I'm sure that I read a thread (that had a link) about it here on EightForums.

It seems fine, not anything obvious for desktop users, though.

I saw somewhere that the build number changes to 6.3.9600.16404 with the updates.
