Mozilla edges closer to replacing Flash with JavaScript

The efforts to remove Adobe as a source of pain for Mozilla and Firefox continue at pace, with the announcement that Shumway has entered the Firefox codebase.

The Shumway experiment intends to replace the omnipresent Flash plugin with a JavaScript renderer for Flash's SWF file format that does not use any platform native code. Should the experiment be successful, it would allow Firefox to dispense with the need for a Flash plugin, which would allow the browser to render Flash content on platforms that Adobe does not support, while at the same time removing a common attack vector via Flash from the browser

Well, basically, chrome uses same adobe's flash player, whereas mozilla is trying to implement their own rendering with javascript. As for now, it doesnt work, and will not work for long time.

That covers the video audio/issues for the flash flv format that gets replaced by the html5 webm format.

Here there's talk about swf and that's is a flash binary/executable if you compile actionscript code.
It's not a video or audio file you see on youtube, it's a program/application by itself that can contain video and audio.

The HTML5 Canvas Element can be used for simple animations (e.g. simple arcade style games).

Still, it will take many years (like 10 or more) to completely get rid of adobes flash, because flash is ruling over 50% of the internet, it is getting a little bit better with every release, and there is no competing programs as for now, just a buch of visions like html5 or mozilas shumway, as these things are far away from the level at which flash is now.

    Very pretty.

    I got these scores...

    Chrome 30.0 got a score of 3133 HTML5 capabilities of 6/7
    Firefox 24.0 got a score of 2198 with HTML5 capabilities 6/7
IE11 in compatibility mode got a score of 481 and HTML capabilities of 1/7
IE11 not in compatibility mode stopped with 4 minutes to go though on "The WebGL in HTML5 allows fullblown 3D graphics within the browser without any addons. The test renders a simple transparent 3D sphere, inside which are six bumbmapped spheres.".

Not sure what that means if anything. IE11 doesn't like HTML5?
