Microsoft Appointing New O S Chief to Revamp Windows

Microsoft is currently getting through a major reorganization plan supposed to help Redmond focus more on devices and services, even though Steve Ballmer, the current leader of the company, is expected to retire within the next 12 months.

AllThingsD is now reporting that more internal changes are currently taking place inside the company, with the board planning to appoint a new head of the operating system division to revamp Windows and the other adjacent products.

Sources close to the matter have revealed that Terry Myerson, who was named chief of the OS division as part of Ballmer’s reorganization, will remain in charge of this unit, but Joe Belfiore, previously head of Windows Phone, will be responsible for a new unit focused on phones, tablets and PCs running Windows.

[h=1]The end of Windows as we know it[/h]
Earlier this morning, Ina Fried at AllThingsD dropped a bombshell: Today, the Windows unit is going through a massive reorganization that passes over many Windows stalwarts, bringing in a whole new crop of Windows honchos. Details are only starting to emerge, but this could well mark the start of a massive re-thinking of the way Windows works.

It's about time.
The old guard is dropping like flies. Steve Sinofsky -- who brought us Windows 7, the best Windows of all time, as well as the monstrosity known as Windows 8 -- left last year.
DeVaan has been the head tech guy on the Windows dev team, and before that on the Office dev team, for almost all of his 30 years at Microsoft. Again, he's low profile and widely respected. DeVaan's the guy who supervised building the plumbing in Windows 7 and 8 -- and most of Office before that.

DeVaan and George worked with Sinofsky to build Office 95.
They're all gone. Moved on, moved out, maybe retired. We'll know more details shortly. The point that sticks in my craw is that none of the three were responsible for the Jekyll-and-Hyde mess that is Windows 8.

Yeah! Let's hope Google pursue their Android desktop development with more gusto in this M$ "vista" period..

Personally I wouldn't touch a Google OS.

Despite how bad everyone says MS is, or was in the past, Google are much worse.

Well, I have been rather impressed with their enhancements from Gingerbread to Jellybean.. I, for one, would like to see that adapted to a desktop environment..

I meant behaviour.

We'd be rotting in prison, if we:

  • Gave someone a free cookie and then used that as justification to stalk them 24/7
  • Refused to pay the correct amount of tax

I have a media box with an Android interface and it is awful to use with a remote control.
It would probably be OK with a touchscreen TV, but who would want one of those?

I don't have a Smart Phone, so I can't comment on Android's effectiveness on that form factor.

Really?

I think you will find the big tech corps do what they can to "minimise" their tax. Apple and MS have a lot more cash than google. I suspect the Nokia purchase was made using offshore cash reserves.

Backdoors, bypassing encryption, attempting to gather info about everything the user does, installs, runs, searches, etc. targetting adds to be fired at the user on their pc, and more... It is all lovely stuff.

Could be. If there is a genuine choice, that will be much better for the consumer, a transformation in fact. It won't benefit some of the corps, so they will be trying to stop it.

Your comment was related to my other quote. :)

My main gripe is their constant stalking and the fact that almost every website is "clagged up" with their junk JavaScript routines.
I don't see Apple and/or MS routines on almost every webpage.

The TechRepublic and ZDNet sites don't work properly without "googletagservices.com" being activated (a recent "improvement").

The tax issue is a secondary gripe, because as you posted, all the Corporations dodge tax, whilst simultaneously complainingly loudly about how high tax rates are.

Also I don't recall Apple or MS using the tagline:
"Do the right thing: don't be evil. Honesty and Integrity in all we do. Our business practices are beyond reproach. We make money by doing good things."
