Microsoft's Haswell-based Surface Pro 2: The leaks begin

Microsoft officials have said earlier this summer that the company is planning to release some time during its fiscal 2014 (ending June 30, 2014) "updates" to its Surface line of tablets.

That's all the company has said publicly. Privately, sources are beginning to leak tidbits from unnamed sources about what the new Surfaces will look like.

NeoWin.net posted on September 4 that the Intel-based Surface 2 will run Intel's next-generation Core i5 "Haswell" processor. Neowin also said RAM will be doubled from 4 GB to 8 GB and that the new model will include a "refined" kickstand.

Paul Thurrott on the Windows SuperSite corroborated the Core i5 Haswell information. Thurrott also said that the battery life of the Surface Pro 2 will go from the current four to five hours to up to seven hours

Don’t Wait for the Surface Tablet, Microsoft Tells Partner

Microsoft is reportedly getting ready to debut the second-generation Surface tablet, but at the same time, the company is also trying to expand market availability of the existing models.

The tech giant recently announced that nine more stores in the UK are getting the Surface RT and the Pro, while more retailers are likely to be announced soon.

Microsoft’s advice for those still waiting to get the Surface is as simple as it could be: don’t wait for our tablet, as there are plenty of other Windows 8 tablets on the market.
Don't Wait.

Surface 2 leaked details paint lackluster picture

If the reports I've seen of new Surface 2 features can be believed, Microsoft has a huge problem on its hands. Where many people are begging for significant advances in the Surface line, the top improvement mentioned to date is a revolutionary new two-position kickstand.

If that and Windows 8.1 are all we have to look forward to, Microsoft's heading into a disastrous holiday buying (or shunning) season.
In the past few hours, two usually reliable Windows-centric sites have posted curt previews of the widely anticipated Surface 2 tablets. First, Brad Sams at Neowin explained:

Keep your eye on it. Maybe it'll magically perform unicorn tricks like running real programs if you stare hard enough.

Toshiba's Encore 8" with full W8.1 will be infinitely more usable than that garbage and uses Bay Trail.

Toy? Yeah....

Really? Arm procs run x86 legacy apps fast? Like for reals? I can run Visual Studio and Photoshop, Final Cut, play Battlefield?

Please learn me.

Chromebooks? When Arm does this and when Arm does that.

When then? When will I be able to run progs like Final Cut and Battlefield on my Nexus 10? With multi-monitor support and digitizer. When?

Where is the unicorn Arm/Android that does everything my Pro can?

When you can do this with your Arm/Android, let me know.

My friend, My friend,

Get a grip you and many others are in dream land that you think all these MS surface divices and this new MS Surface Pro will go anyware except right into the ground like the entire world will find out in 2014.

Like Windows 8 and 8.1
Like MS Surface and Surface Pro Devices

Microsoft will never be able to sell or catch Apples Mac Air or their new 2014 Mac Pro matter of fact Microsoft better turn this project off right now cuz Microsoft is in dream land if they think they can make anykind of dent in the portable market

Apple is currently leader in this field and end place will be Google with their very cheap new and super fast Cromebooks you will see very soon that Apple and Google will push Microsoft away from wold wide game or Portable Computers ;)

With that said and in the matter of fact Microsoft will not be able to give them away down the road, these are just toys, look like toys and run like toys and powered by Microsofts worse operating system ever build to this date...

I suggest wait till the sales reports start to roll in by years end or for sure 2014 and then we will see where this Microsoft Toy called Surface goes and how its doing in this market...

Very interesting news.
Would like to see a 8" Surface Pro or Nokia 8" tablet with Atom Bay Trail.

A Surface Pro with lower specs and long battery life would be a welcome addition to the family. I don't see why they can't make an ultra thin Surface with full 8.1 using Bay Trail at a reasonable price point somewhere in between Pro and RT.

Agree.
There is a market for the high powered tablets like Surface Pro, but most average users don't need that much power. If they want a full Windows 8.1 tablet the Atom Bay Trail, or similar, is a good option.
I got a HP X2 convertible for the Wife, it has an Atom Z2760 (Clover Trail) CPU and it is perfect for her usage scenario. When this configuration catches on and the price drops it will be a solid device for many, ie the average users.
