New stats show Windows 8 usage up sharply as XP plummets

The latest monthly NetMarketShare reports contain a few eyebrow-raising numbers. Windows 8 is up sharply, XP usage has plummeted, and Google's Chrome browser seems to be falling out of favor. But this month's report might need a big asterisk to account for a key methodology change.

On the first day of each month, the good folks at Net Applications release their NetMarketShare statistics, which measure worldwide usage share of desktop and mobile operating systems and browsers.

This month’s numbers, covering August 2013, contain several eyebrow-raising blips:

• After posting steady but unspectacular monthly gains since its launch last October, Windows 8 usage spiked up dramatically, going from 5.42 percent to 7.65 percent of worldwide web usage in the course of a single month.
• Windows XP usage, which had been dropping at a similarly steady but unremarkable pace, suddenly and dramatically plummeted from 37.19 percent to 33.66 percent.
• Google’s Chrome browser showed a sudden drop in usage, plunging in one month from 17.76 percent to 16 percent. Every other browser gained in percentage terms, with Internet Explorer hitting a two-year high of 57.6 percent.​

With a worldwide installed base of nearly 1.5 billion PCs, each one of those moves represents a shift of tens of millions.

Windows 8 surpasses Vista's uptake rate -- 10 months after

Computerworld - Microsoft got some good news Sunday as metrics company Net Applications said Windows 8's user share in August is now larger than Vista's at the same point in the latter's post-launch timeline.

Windows 8's user share of all PCs running Windows, a tally that included Windows 8.1, the update slated to ship next month, jumped to 8.4% in August, Net Applications said Sunday. The 2.5-point gain was a single-month record for the struggling OS, and more than double the previous record set in June.
Ten months after its January 2007 retail debut, Windows Vista -- the operating system widely dubbed a flub and a flop -- accounted for 7.3% of all Windows PCs.

Windows 8 rockets to 7.41% market share as Windows XP fall

The gains of both Windows 8 and Windows 7 can be attributed to a minor drop for Windows Vista, which declined 0.13 percentage points (from 4.24 percent to 4.11 percent), and a huge one for Windows XP, which dropped a huge 3.53 percentage points (from 37.19 percent to 33.66 percent). This has put it below the 35 percent mark for the first time in years.

good numbers... that means 110 million Windows 8 users. actual users, not just license sales. That's more significant than the 72 million Mac OS X users that Apple reported this past June.

Yep they changed the way the beans are counted so the numbers do not mean any thing because you have no comparison (first Mouth of numbers).
