Users Mixed on Windows 8.1 RTM

Windows 8.1 RTM is already available for download following the leaks we’ve told you about all week, so many users are now running it on either laptops or desktop computers.

While 8.1 is clearly an important update for Windows 8, one that also brings back the Start button, some users still see it as an operating system that continues to be aimed at touch-capable devices, such as tablets or hybrids.

Opinions continue to be mixed on whether Windows 8.1 RTM is a necessary update for the core operating system, with many consumers still thinking that sticking to Windows 7 or switching to Linux is a much better choice.

That's not opinion. Windows 8 was designed for hybrid devices.

I've played with W8.1 Enterprise (64 bit) for a couple of hours.

I have set it to boot to the desktop and to use the "All Apps" view on the Start Screen.
It seems less annoying than W8 seemed.

I get trapped in the Metro settings windows though (maybe because it's in a VM).

Also I notice that the main update window claims that I'm using "Automatic updates", but when I go to "Change update settings", that window says that I'm set to "Check for updates".

There you go - a mixed reaction.

There is as, Paul Thurrott put it , a strange small subset who like it on a desktop/laptop. Sadly for MS, a lot don't like it.

Paul Thurrott
the even stranger and smaller subset of you who insist that the limitations of using Windows RT are in fact an advantage, well. You’re going to love Windows 8 “Blue.”

Maybe there was a reason for calling it "Blue"?

Blue facepalm...
