Windows 8 Keeps Gaining Users As the 8.1 Launch Nears

Windows 8 continues to be the fourth top operating system in the world, but the latest figures indicate that Microsoft’s modern operating system keeps growing every day.

Statistics provided by StatCounter for the month of August show that so far Windows 8 has only managed to get closer to Mac OS X, but if the same pace is maintained, it should overtake Apple’s platform in the coming weeks.

If you look at statcounter graph, it has gone from 5.28% to 6.6% in 3 mths. A bit more than 0.4% a month. Laptops break and have to be replaced. Inevitable.

I've just recently bought 2 laptops, one for me and one for my wife. Both came with Windows 8 preinstalled. They replaced a used loaner my dad gave me that ran Windows 7. I was thinking laptops and tablets when I posted that, and not so much desktops. I really thought I was going to have to upgrade my wife's laptop to Windows 7 but all she does is Facebook. I just put an IE shortcut (desktop version) on the Start screen and set her home page to her Facebook page. Then added another one for Shutdown. So far no complaints from her.

I wonder where the 20.58% of xp users are going to go, after it is no longer supported by MS

What can I say, that is all she does on it. I got her a laptop because she wanted something with a full keyboard and a decent sized screen. She doesn't want to use my laptop because it was on the expensive side and two big to balance on the arm of her chair. She's scared she is going to drop it and break it. Mine has a 17.3 inch screen while hers is a normal 15 inch.

A fair number of them will likely just carry on like nothing happened until the PC breaks and won't run anymore.

And if you look at the statcounter graph for ten month, since the introduction of Windows, it shows this:

The total loss for MS pre-W8 OSes during this time had been 9.37% of the OS market share and Windows 8 recaptured 7.03%. The net loss for MS was 2.34% market share, that had been split up between the mobile devices and Linux. Presumably, the "other" category includes Windows 8 mobile devices.

The chances are that this trend will continue, if the end users keep preferring the mobile platform and businesses continue extending the BYOD based corporate access. In either case, it is doubtful that the current 84.82% platform market share for MS will disappear anytime soon...

HP Quick Launch for Windows 8? in Drivers & Hardware
I have an HP Envy 4t Ultrabook, and for Windows 7, I could install the Quick Launch software update to get functionality of the Wireless button, and other function keys.
