Windows 8.1 won't rescue PC market this year, IDC says

DG News Service - The PC market will weaken even further this year and Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8.1 OS will be unable to reverse the drop in shipments, IDC said Thursday. Due in part to increased adoption of mobile devices globally and a drop in PC sales in China, shipments will shrink 9.7% in 2013, according to IDC, which previously had predicted a fall of 7.7% drop.
With Windows 8, Microsoft has put a tablet-like touch user interface on PCs, which has baffled users buying non-touch PCs. Touch laptops remain expensive, and PC makers expect enterprises to upgrade laptops to the Windows 7 OS. The Windows 8 OS and high prices of PCs are reasons why people are looking at attractively priced tablets instead, Chou said.

I just had a look at 8.1

It is possible MS may be able to lull the average Joe into buying it, but I am not convinced.

The fake start button and a desktop wallpaper behind the playschool squares isn't likely to fool many people.

Once average Joe figures out that 8.1 is basically 8 with a few minor tweaks, he won't be interested. The phrase 'putting lipstick on a pig' comes to mind when thinking of the differences between the two.

Seems to me, the one device it should be used on. tablets, are selling, just not Windows tablets. And it's of no benefit to me, and a lot of other people it would seem, to run it on my Desktop PC's. I have 8 on my laptop. For me it's OK with a touch pad, once I turned the edge swipes off. I only briefly played with the 8.1 preview. I liked the changes I saw but it wasn't awe inspiring or anything.

I downloaded W8.1 last night.
Now I just have to install it somewhere, perhaps VMware Player will do the job this time.

W8 had a big "dummy spit" when I tried to install it in VMware Workstation 7.
I ended up creating VHDs for the all of the W8 previews.

Hi there
People need to realize the PC market is NOT DEAD but has changed -- the market will be slightly bigger than niche but never again the huge volumes that the early days of pc computing had -- we ALL (even those who swear by their laptops) use other devices a lot these days -- surfing on the road I usually use a smart phone these days --other use tablets etc. Even for buying plane / train tickets a mobile is good and those e-tickets or m-tickets (mobile one's with the square "barcode" image on them) I use a smart phone.

But for office applications or creating content etc I still NEED a "proper computer" -- many though just don't anymore --and IT'S NO POINT BLAMING MS or WINDOWS for the decline in PC sales --it would happen ANYWAY.

Some people just don't get it -- if the demand for PC's was truly still high people would buy Apple or Linux if they hated Windows so much -- Windows 8 actually hasn't really gone down too horribly amongst "The great Unwashed" -- it's just that the whole era of computing devices has changed -- and I absolutely can't understand why so many people can't fathom this simple and OBVIOUS fact.

Cheers
jimbo

Windows 8 hasn't helped matters, though. And neither Apple or Linux are a viable alternative for the majority of people. The first because it's damn too expensive, and the second because it lacks commercial support and it's a usability nightmare (yes, it still is, yes, I've used it recently, no, not much has changed)

I don't think anybody is suggesting windows 8 is entirely responsible for the decline in pc sales. It is clear win 8 is exacerbating the problem.

If MS had released a popular OS ( more accurately, if the windows offerings were popular ), then some people would still be moving to tablets and phones. It would not entirely reverse the decline.

MS have released something they should have known is hard to sell - at a time when the market is already under pressure.

I've played with W8.1 Enterprise (64 bit) for a couple of hours.

I have set it to boot to the desktop and to use the "All Apps" view on the Start Screen.
It seems less annoying than W8 seemed.

I get trapped in the Metro settings windows though (maybe because it's in a VM).

Also I notice that the main update window claims that I'm using "Automatic updates", but when I go to "Change update settings", that window says that I'm set to "Check for updates".

Hi there
Windows 8 has NOT MADE AN IOTA OF DIFFERENCE to the decline in the PC market --this was bound to happen in any case and the biggest surprise of all is in why it took so long to happen -- probably the biggest cause is the advent of relatively cheap SMARTPHONES and decent Wi-Fi availability in major urban centres.

Those who want to blame W8 on the PC's woes are barking totally up the wrong tree -- the idea of owning a computer these days isn't just that strong for people --there are all sorts of alternatives that weren't available previously.

Those that also bought machines within the last two years or so don't really need to upgrade -- the computers are more than powerful enough -- but look at the number of SSD's being bought --there's plenty of evidence that people are hanging on to older machines but making them very useable by the simple swap to an SSD.

Ms might be guilty of not innovating enough and it certainly needs to get some new stuff be it software or hardware (or both) out into the market but it's just IMBECELLIC and IDIOTIC in the extreme to blame Ms for the decline in PC sales.

In any case even if Ms did NOTHING the revenue it receives from Enterprise OS, Office and support services will ensure it doesn't starve for YEARS to come.

Cheers
jimbo

Fine. I'm putting off buying a new laptop until something better than Windows 8 comes along, hopefully. I don't think I'm the only one. Anecdotal evidence, of course, but then so is your opinion that Windows 8 is not having any influence on the PC market.
