In an odd turn of events, Windows 8 has been banned from HWBot, one of the world’s top benchmarking and overclocking communities. All existing benchmarks recorded by Windows 8 have been disqualified. This is due to a fault in Windows 8′s real-time clock (RTC), which all benchmarking tools use as a baseline.

Interesting bug. Of course, the problem is that you're changing the clock frequency at runtime, something that the OS probably isn't expecting.

It would seem to me that the HWBot could still publish the results, but mark them as "potentially inaccurate", or they could modify their test agent to detect if the clock has been modified and disqualify those results.

I don't overclock. I don't play those 3d games. As long as my system can run 5 visual studio windows, Photoshop, gimp, word, excel, autocad, microstation, and half a dozen other apps at the same time, I'm good.

of course we all know the average user must always overclock their pc's

That's the average gamer and not really all the average users.

They were my thoughts as well. And to say it's another reason to stick with Windows 7 is going a bit far. It's hardly a show stopping bug.

Though I did a stopwatch test myself, just like in the video on that page, and the Windows 8 clock didn't fluctuate or slow down at all. It seemed fine.

    Weird benchmark scores?

Would be nice to see if anyone tested this with benchmark programs on their own hardware.

Take for instance a program like SuperPi: what scores do we get on Windows 7 and what on Windows 8...

I use an old version of Passmark to do my BMs, it's to show me relative speed in my own systems- The highest score I have gotten was above 500.

This system here is overclocked to 2450 mHz, but Cool n Quiet changes the speed constantly. It's overclocked by 7% on my board.

My other system is not overclocked, only runs as 2200 mHz, but it is NOTICEABLY faster than this one.

OK, this is THIS pc, overclocked way faster than my Media PC.

I don;t know why my Media Pc BMs out so much better:

That;s about the best score of all of my Home PCs, my Gateway Core Duo only BMmmed to a little over 500.

I like this old program, it uses a simple brute force test to check everything. My other system probably BMs better cos of the 750GB Hybrid Drive I use for my system drive.
