The triumph of Patch Tuesday

One of the great, unappreciated inventions in security came from Microsoft almost 10 years ago in October, 2003: Patch Tuesday. Microsoft invented the process of regularly scheduled security updates. It was somewhat controversial at the time, but it was clearly the right thing to do and has eliminated what was becoming a regular series of crises, thus relieving a great deal of pressure from security admins.

It was a great invention indeed! In a few decades from now this will still be counted as a, if not the, major event in computer security history.

Although MS deserves all the bashing they have received for Windows 8 and Metro they also deserve praise when it is merited. Patch Tuesday was a great idea, and although MS had to admit that their OS was venerable to malware they took action to reduce and eliminate the possibility of problems....this is where MS TOTALLY OUTSHINES that stupid FRUIT company.

Now if only MS could recapture some of that well used MODESTY in current times,

Steve...stop trying to make MS as arrogant, and cartoonish as that stupid FRUIT company!:roflmao:

Yah, it's a good idea, but, I think they had been making updates that were wholly unnecessary. And they all say the same thing" A Vulnerability in (xxx) can allow a an attacker to gain control over the system"

I appreciated it enough when there are valid updates, but every week you see update after update that says the exact same thing. And I've never known these updates to actually PREVENT a malicious attack. A client of mine insisted on downloading all of them, but when hit with Sirefef, someone visibly took control of his system. The guy had also uninstalled Eset which was protecting him. His workers always sneak into the office to go to pron websites.
