Microsoft ups price on Windows Server 2012 R2 by 28%

Microsoft quietly published new pricing and licensing sheets for its coming Windows Server 2012 R2 product.

The bad news: Those who want the Datacenter version are going to have to shell out 28 percent more for the R2 version than the current Windows Server 2012 Datacenter release. The Windows Server 2012 Datacenter SKU costs $4,809 (plus additional client-access licenses, priced separately). The Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter SKU costs $6,155, plus client-access license fees. (These are prices for the Open NL version, which is the highest priced volume-license version.)
Pricing for the other three Windows Server 2012 R2 SKUs remain the same as they are for Windows Server 2012.
Here are the new prices for the four Server 2012 R2 SKUs (Datacenter, Standard, Essentials, Foundation):

Hi there
Well there's always Linux Server editions or some VMWARE VDI solutions. I don't think upping the price for big business is unreasonable at all -- it's not as if it will directly effect the consumer end of the market -- enterprises usually need very robust systems which require a lot of support.

In any case have a look at the Stock Market lately -- some of the SP 500 and DOW compnies (as well as a lot in NASDAQ) are awash with cash at the moment.

These big companies are often indirectly subsidising consumer versions of the OS etc. I mean are you REALLY bothered if Shell for example has to fork out another 4,000 USD -- that's not even small change to a company like that -- and Joe Bloggs under the railway arches isn't going to use the Data Center edition of 2012 Server don't you think.

Cheers
jimbo

Datacenter is used a lot these days. You buy a license of datacenter per physical processor in your server and you can run an unlimited number of Windows vms on that host. It only takes about 7 vms to break even, anything over that is just a cost savings.

So, in our environment we buy 3 esxi hosts worth of datacenter and can then run as many Windows servers as we want on these 3 esxi hosts.

We just upgraded our farm to 6 new esxi boxes, dual 8 cores in each, 256gb of ram in each, and 4 x 10Gbps nics in each host, as well as 4 x 1Gbps in each host.
