Microsoft debuts Office Mobile app for Android smartphones

Microsoft appears to be spreading the reach of Office on mobile devices. The tech company announced Wednesday that it's now bringing the Office Mobile app to Android.

While Office fans will likely welcome this app addition to the Google Play store, there's a slight catch: the app is free to download but will only work for subscribers to Microsoft's Office 365 Home Premium and ProPlus service

Office Mobile is a pleasant-looking app, and it integrates nicely into Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud storage service, which is essential as Mobile Office depends on SkyDrive and SharePoint to access your files. Although you can open a document attached to an email into Office Mobile, you can't open documents stored in the Android file system or in a cloud service like Dropbox. And you can't save files anywhere but to SkyDrive or SharePoint; even the poor Google Drive app can store files locally. This means you also need a live Internet connection to save your work. Mobile Office is simply too tied to the Office 365 cloud.

Hi there
Not sure why one would even THINK of wanting office apps on a small mobile phone screen -- there's plenty of spreadsheet / power point / outlook viewers around -- fine for a quick READ of an office type document.

But c'mon Peeps --- would you even THINK about composing a complex spread sheet or power point presentation on a mobile phone with a 4.5 inch screen. !!

For a FREE office document handler on Android --Kingsoft office works and is FREE. Even has some limited edit functionality too if you are mad enough to attempt document creation on a mobile phone.

It's a funny trend.

PC sales in a massive slump, and nobody wants PC's anymore, they want smartphones and tablets. People buying smartphones and tablets are either without MS Office or have such a poor experience they find it unusable. So, why again are people getting rid of their PC's in favor of these other devices?

Good question.
I guess those small devices weren't meant for typing text documents and spreadsheets (pretty obvious) but now that they gained popularity, all kind of newer features (even absurd ones) are requested.

Office for mobile:
Still curious how it looks like and how productive it is compared to the PC version.

Survival situation?
It means Mobile devices tend to become Swiss Knives with something for everything: you even have scissors and a saw besides a bottle opener but that saw would be like the mobile office: not the best thing for cutting wood... again, due to its size.

My Nokia phone has the "MS Office Suite", that has limited functionality, very limited, compared to the PC version. Reading Office documents in their "native" format is nice and light editing is fine as well. Even then, I'd rather get on my PC, W7 or W8.1, and do the editing there; I really don't use it that much on the smartphone...

:thumb: Very well put Jimbo. Ironically that's the very same thing I said after first purchasing a Sony Ericsson Android, before Win8 had really even begun to fly. Who the heck would even remotely consider doing spread sheets or even word docs on a screen the size of a couple of match boxes. Let alone having 3 or 4 spreadsheets open simultaneously and copy/pasting, etc.

I bought the Android mob from my son ... he went back to his old mobile with keys instead of touch..

And when asked how I liked it I replied that it was half a phone, and half a computer and not really much good at either.

My old $50 Samsung mobile phone had at least 22 pre-installed free apps that had to be downloaded, and some paid for, onto the $600 Android OS. Simple things like storage folders were missing; the ability to set the thing to keep beeping to remind you there was a received text, etc, etc.

So why keep it? Mainly because of the touch screen which used in conjunction with a stylus is way ahead of keys. But touch on a 24 inch monitor ... never!

So once again, horses for courses and cows for paddocks and cow boys! :dinesh:

I agree with Jimbo. I took a look at office only to discover it wasn't compatible with my 10 inch tablet! But it is compatible with my tiny phone screen! lol

I would have thought they would have at least designed it for use with tablets as well as phones.

Kingston office is a fantastic office app, and shows how it should be done. I have it on my tablet, not that I use it much, but it's there if I need it.

The only good Microsoft app is the one note app, which I find very useful for travel. I research areas and places and save them to one note on my skydrive and can access them from my phone. Now that's useful.

Hi there
I would disagree about a stylus and touch being faster than keys -- except in the one area perhaps when taking notes at a meeting and doing free hand diagrams -- for typical text even a "Two fingered" typist can type far faster than they can write using any sort of writing implement.

Cheers

Hi Jimbo,

Totally agree it's not necessarily faster. I am a qualified touch typist and don't dispute the speed of typing being quicker than touch.

Touch is just easier for me, with "man" fingers and ageing eyesight, to find the right key to press with a stylus. Using fingers is hard work either with touch or keys ... even on a full size keyboard.

I think also that with keys being mechanical they do eventually wear out, whereas hopefully touch will have a longer life.

Having said that I've got an HP programmable calculator that I used during electronic engineering studies back in 1975, and the keys still all work ... and I still use it almost every day. From time to time a key will get sticky and is easily fixed by inverting the calculator and rapidly working the key to dislodge any dust via loosening and letting gravity take care of the rest.
