Windows 8’s NUI Foundation, a Windows 9, Windows 10 Investment

Microsoft is not building just a new version of the Windows client, with Windows 8, the company is laying the foundation for future Windows releases, in terms of natural user interface evolution.

NUI models are already widespread, but they’re still far from being ubiquitous, and there’s one frontier that has yet to be conquered, Windows computers.

The vast majority of Windows PCs today lack support for touch interaction, but this detail is bound to change following the advent of Windows

Well provided we all move to touch devices, sure... but there are some of us that still prefer the firm desktop grounding (including a mouse and keyboard).
I would like to see them further develop this new interface though, the evolution idea behind it sounds good... But again, very touch-centric.

Windows 8 will be the XP of the next 10-15 years. It will be the OS that brings the old to the new as XP did from Windows 2000 to Vista. At first it will fell diffrent, some new and some old, and over time refined into a well oiled system we will love. Just look a XP with no SP and then look at it with SP3. The change is amazing.

Thats what I am saying. Windows 7 was to stablize the name of Windows after Vista. Windows 8 will be the flag ship like XP was for some many years and 95 was before that (I liked 98). We will see many Service Packs for Windows 8. The first one will fix the short comings that will be found with the new UI. The second will add support for new standards that are coming out in 2014 and will add support for ARM cpus. The last one will fix issues with ARM and will pull it all together.

Windows 7 will more likely be the workhorse operating system for a while. Gee, Microsoft is urging corporations and business to not upgrade to Windows 8, but to 7. It's stable and people know how to use it. Windows 8 however, if one went from using Xp for 10 years to 8, that is a ridiculous.

Ahhh, give it time. And time for Metro Apps to be developed.

When one can go from their PC to a tablet and, then, to a Smart Phone and have the same apps ... the enterprise users will buy into it before long.

MS is headed in the right direction, IMO.

Just from reading, not experience.

From what I have read about Windows 8, it looks like it is indeed heading the right direction.

However, the support of mouse and keyboard should be 100%

Hi there
I'd like if Windows is going in this direction for the GUI to be much more User customisable.

If they did it something like SAP is doing with their Web Dynpro apps - based on a Model View Controller or MVC approach the user should be able to mess around with the GUI adding buttons / drop boxes or whatever without a single piece of core Windows code being touched.

I suppose of course Windows is Windows and needs to have a consistent interface but surely by adopting the Mode; View Controller approach the whole argument about the Start up screen and desktop becomes essentially meaningless since the user can create whatever they want -- and MS doesn't have to do a huge amount of code re-writing for the Next version of Windows either.

For those interested

SAP's First effort with MVC in Business Server Pages still used but supplanted in WebDynpro which in theory allows user code to be written in any language )

Model View Controller (MVC) (SAP Library - Model View Controller (MVC))

And the more modern WebDynpro approach where it is a Cinch to add GUI objects - so things like mice events (double click for example) etc shouldn't cause problems in the future.

MVC Architecture for Webdynpro for ABAP « SAP Ignite

Incidentally there is no problem accessing SAP webdynpro applications on a smart phone or a tablet either since the user is simply using a web browser and accessing the application via a Portal.

Usually a PC is used but the new technology allows for ANY web enabled device to be used -- this is where Windows 8 is obviously heading and from the initial offering we've all being playing with for the last month or so it seems to be doing its job and is definitely going in the right direction so far.

Cheers
jimbo
