Whilst that's true, I would like to see a more active version of it on the desktop, rather than having to go back to the start menu all the time.

Yeah, but what if you want your gadgets "always on top" - regardless of what you are currently doing.

I am hoping we will be able to pin live tiles to the top of our screen...

    Hi there
I'm sure that's the intention ( to be able to pin metro tiles to your desktop if you want) since the basic premise of W8 is to be able to present a consistent interface between traditional PC's, Tablets, Smart phones and possibly other devices which haven't even been invented yet while still retaining the features of a "Classical" computer OS.

For my take on W8 -- as a preview barely out of the development labs it's been remarkable smooth and stable -- one up to MS on this one so I'm sure as we near beta and even RC1 these features are bound to be included.

    Cheers

Yes, that sounds about right. For them it's up to how we respond, I guess.
I love how you say "and possibly other devices which haven't even been invented yet"... It's almost like MS has developed into a totally different company than what it was 5 years ago.

Uhh....I'm running like 10 different gadgets on both of my computers in Windows 8. They haven't gone anywhere. Perhaps a more accurate title would be to say that Microsoft has stopped distributing gadgets. As for the old Vista sidebar, there is a gadget out there called "7 Sidebar" that brings back that functionality plus some extra features. I use it on my desktop and it works fine. Plus they just added the ability to run multiple instances of it so you can have two docked sidebars on either side of the screen if you are into that sort of thing.....

Right, but you're also running a pre beta OS version. They may decide to completely remove the sidebar.exe process in the beta or final release. Who knows at this point?

Most likely yeah- they will just stop officially "supporting" and distributing them, but they'll still work.
